Fear the Spotlight is filled with exciting puzzles, and one of the first puzzles that players encounter in the game involves unlocking a door with a golden statue. Walking up close and inspecting the door reveals that the statue has its hands outstretched. Seasoned horror players will immediately be able to tell that they'll need to find something for the hand in order to open the door.

Solving the puzzle and opening the door are essential to progression. There’s also an achievement/trophy tied to it called Thorned Key. Once you manage to open the door, you’ll automatically unlock this achievement. Here's how to solve the Rose Door puzzle in Fear the Spotlight and unlock this achievement.

After running away from the library fire in the first section of Fear the Spotlight, you’ll find yourself in the School Hallway. Keep moving forward, and a door will open at the end of the hall. Here, you’ll see a door with a Golden Statue on it. This is the Rose Door. Interact with it and inspect the outstretched hand to update your To-Do List.

To open the Rose Door, you’ll have to find some key items, mainly the Screwdriver and the Pliers, which will help you collect the Metal Rose from the Locker Room.

How to Find the Toolbox

After interacting with the Rose Door, head down the right hallway and take the door you see on your right. You’ll arrive at the Locker Room. Check the window on your left, and you’ll notice the toolbox sitting on a table. You won't be able to open the door to the Office just yet; you’ll need to get the Office Keycard first.

You’ll see an Elusive Specter when you run down the hallway from the Rose Door, but don’t worry; they’re harmless.

Check the area thoroughly and read all the notes. On the left side of the locker room, you’ll see a patch of dirt and a golden Metal Rose popping out of it. Interact with the patch of dirt, dig the dirt, and you’ll see that the Rose is held by a set of hands. You’ll also see a vending machine in the room and a box of Welding Glue inside it at the B34 slot.

Go into the washroom on the left side and inspect the Gym Bag sitting on the table. Open the Zipper to collect the Office Keycard. Additionally, grab the Inhaler behind you near the trash bin.

Use the Office Keycard to get into the office and interact with the Toolbox. It has a combination lock, and you’ll find the password in a note near the lockers in the Office. The password is 001, and it can be used to open the Toolbox and grab the Screwdriver inside. You won't be able to take the Pliers, since they’re broken and need to be fixed before you can use them.

You’ll get an achievement if you unlock the Toolbox without reading the Note with the password.

How to Fix the Broken Pliers

To fix the Broken Pliers, you’ll need the Welding Glue you saw inside the Vending Machine earlier. However, you’ll have to find some quarters first. Open the vent inside the Office using the Screwdriver and crouch through the opening. Go to the other side of the rubble and interact with the window to get into the Boy’s Locker Room.

The entrance to the washroom is blocked, but you’ll find an opening in the wall that you can crouch through. Go inside and interact with the grate on the floor. Here, use the Screwdriver to remove the screws, and you’ll find Two Quarters inside. Pick them up.

Now, you’ll have to get back to the Vending Machine, but you’ll have your first encounter with a Spotlight Head in the Boy’s Locker Room as soon as you crouch back out through the hole. It’s a humanoid monster that has a spotlight for a head. There’s no way to kill it, so you’ll have to stealthily walk back to the window. Stepping into the light will have you pulled towards it, causing damage. Thankfully, there is plenty of cover in the area, and even if you get caught once, you can simply run to the window to escape.

How to Escape the Spotlight Head Without Getting Spotted

There's an achievement/trophy for escaping the Spotlight Head without getting spotted, so it's worth trying to stay undetected. If you get caught, you can quit to the main menu and click continue to try again.

Use the Inhaler to heal if you get caught by the Spotlight Head.

Make your way back to the Vending Machine, insert the Quarter, and press B34 to get your hands on the Welding Glue. Then, use the glue on the Broken Pliers and pick them up.

How to Get the Metal Rose

With the Pliers in your inventory, return to the Golden Rose you saw in the Locker Room. Use the Pliers to remove each finger and pick up the Golden Rose. Now go back to the Rose Door and use it on the hands to open the door. You'll see the notification for unlocking the Thorned Key achievement/trophy pop up on your screen after walking through the door.

Fear the Spotlight offers a classic survival horror experience with plenty of mind-bending puzzles. While the Rose Door puzzle shouldn’t prove too difficult for most players, as the game progresses, you’ll encounter puzzles that may have you scratching your head for hours. That’s part of what makes Fear the Spotlight so fun.
