Summary

  • FBC: Firebreak draws inspiration from Overcooked for its emphasis on chaotic cooperative gameplay.
  • The development team also looked at titles like Space Marine 2, Deep Rock Galactic, and Aliens: Fireteam Elite, among others.
  • The team also looked at how Arrowhead Studios tackled the challenges of the genre in Helldivers 2.

The release date for FBC: Firebreak is approaching, and game director Mike Kayetta recently revealed that one surprising source of inspiration for Remedy's cooperative FPS has been Overcooked. While it might seem odd at first to compare a cooking simulation game with a shooter like FBC: Firebreak, Kayetta made a good point by emphasizing the cooperative aspects shared between both games.

FBC: Firebreak will offer a three-player co-op experience, developed by Remedy Entertainment—the same studio behind the popular third-person shooter Control. Players will be able to experience the studio’s new game when it releases on June 17, 2025, for PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. With FBC: Firebreak, Remedy is shifting genres, and as a result, the team has sought new sources of inspiration from successful titles that have already made a mark on the industry. Far from the expected, Remedy's inspiration for its cooperative shooter is quite surprising.

Speaking to GameSpot, game director Mike Kayetta was asked about the games the team has been drawing inspiration from while developing the upcoming FBC: Firebreak. Kayetta mentioned several titles that have performed well in the industry, such as Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Deep Rock Galactic, and Aliens: Fireteam Elite, among others. However, Kayetta also revealed that the team looked at Overcooked due to its chaotic yet enjoyable nature, and how the game succeeds in making players feel that “things get out of hand,” while still providing “meaningful agency” despite the chaos.

FBC: Firebreak Drew Inspiration from Overcooked's 'Fun Type of Chaos'

Overcooked games are all about collaboration and teamwork, which offers a valuable perspective for a game like FBC: Firebreak, which aims to feature different classes with defined roles, where everyone needs to focus on their tasks or the mission will start to fall apart. This is especially interesting considering that the Remedy team hasn’t been playing Left 4 Dead, despite some obvious similarities between the two titles. According to Kayetta, this is because the Left 4 Dead formula is already embedded in the team's DNA.

In addition to these games, Kayetta also mentioned that the massively popular Helldivers 2 has been crucial for the team, particularly the way Arrowhead Studios handles the various challenges that arise in these types of games. It remains to be seen how Remedy has managed to shape FBC: Firebreak based on the inspiration taken from all these games, as well as its own experience in developing previously successful titles.
