Upcoming anime-style shooter Fate Trigger: The Novita tasks players with facing each other in massive battles on a richly designed world made from scattered sky islands. Taking on the role of one of several heroes called Awakeners, the battle royale's players must investigate the secrets of the destroyed world while avoiding the toxic Paleblight phenomenon, upgrading and customizing their guns, and taking down opponents with the goal of being the last one standing. Anime fans and shooter enthusiasts alike will be able to try out this genre-combining game when it launches in 2025.

The Best War Games spoke to Fate Trigger: The Novita's publishing manager Ruby Liu and lead designer Terry Liao (via translation). They discussed the many heroes who inhabit Fate Trigger's world, how they plan to use a multimedia approach to gradually introduce players to the game's deep and mysterious lore, and Saroasis Studios' commitment to keeping Fate Trigger free to play and avoiding any pay-to-win elements. This transcript has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Fate Trigger's Awakeners Must Uncover The World's Secrets

Q: Fate Trigger's anime art style is absolutely gorgeous. What anime inspired you when creating it?

A: Our producer and the whole team are all anime fans - big shooting game and anime enthusiasts. The inspiration mostly comes from classic anime works from Japan.

Q: There are tons of tantalizing little hints towards the game's lore - the world shattered into islands, the deadly Paleblight disaster. Could you talk about how you will share that lore with players?

A: For IP-related content such as manga and trailers, we will mostly display [the characters] outside the game. In-game, we will show this mysterious and amazing content to our players in a fragmented manner. Players can focus on playing the game, experiencing the shooting mechanics, and immersing themselves in each round, but outside the game they have free time to review and scan a lot of trailer content in the game's world.

Q: Fate Trigger will be launching with a varied lineup of heroes, but will you be adding more heroes to the game as time goes on?

A: Yes, definitely. At launch, we will probably have around 20 heroes. We will add more to the game later.

Q: My favorite of the heroes you showed off was the bunny girl. She's really adorable, and I love her defensive gameplay style - what can you tell us about her?

A: As you can see, her visuals look just like an ordinary bunny. Actually, in Fate Trigger, she's something called a "Starhopper." She may look like just a timid bunny, but she has a rich background story. When you learn it, you'll find she is not just a bunny.

As you can see, she can build a pixel fortress using her game machine. She has a very close relationship and affinity with her game machine. Her background story tells where she came from and her origins - and she comes from a game world. She lives in a game world. She's not just a bunny!

In the future, there will be more hero characters like Starhopper, that may look like or have bodies like animals that you know from the real world. When you really delve into it, you'll find that they're not just the bodies that you see. Because we have an anime style we can use a lot of imagination here.

Q: You mentioned that Fate Trigger is free-to-play and fully committed to having no pay-to-win elements. How will its Battle Pass system work? Will it be free?
