A teaser has dropped for the newest Koei Tecmo action RPG, Fate Samurai/Remnant. The game is set to be a partnership between Koei Tecmo, developer Omega Force, Type-Moon, and Aniplex.
Fate Samurai/Remnant is set to be an extension of the existing Fate universe, generally best known for Fate Stay/Night and Fate/Zero. The series got its start as a visual novel, following the story of Shirou Emiya, a student who finds himself caught up in a Holy Grail War. Since then, the Fate series has expanded into a massive series spanning the history of humankind, with regular releases of games, films, anime, and updates to mobile game Fate Grand/Order.
Fate Samurai/Remnant was unveiled during the Fate New Years celebration, alongside reveals and detailing of other Fate projects in the works. A brief teaser has been released for the game, though it lacks any actual gameplay footage. The game is set somewhere in feudal Japan and focuses on a young sword-wielding protagonist who finds himself under siege. After deflecting an attack, his hand glows with a Command Seal and a Servant appears, defending him and asking if he's the one who summoned them.
There isn't much more to be seen in the trailer, though big fans of the Fate series will probably be most excited about the ending. The playable character once again finds himself under attack, but this time the assailant is revealed to be none other than Musashi Miyamoto, the legendary swordsman of Japan. Newcomers to the series may not recognize the hero, though, as Fate has gender-bent Musashi to be a woman, who has previously appeared in Fate Grand/Order as a summonable Servant.
Koei Tecmo is describing the game as an Action RPG, without further information as to what the gameplay will be like. Koei Tecmo and developer Omega Force are known in part for Musou-style games, such as Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which let players fight immense hordes of enemies as some of the best-known and strongest heroes in the franchise. In Hyrule Warriors, this means playing as characters like Link and Zelda, but given the immense list of Fate servants and heroes, there's a lot to potentially pull from, even if the game limits itself to Japanese history. However, it's not yet confirmed that the title will be a Musou.
With new Fate animation projects and games on the way, there's a lot for fans of the series to be excited about going into 2023.
Fate Samurai/Remnant is set to release in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
