Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse has revealed a variety of early purchases bonuses for the game in a new trailer. A remaster of the 2008 Wii title, Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse promises updated graphics across the board and new costumes for players to unlock.
Marketing has recently ramped up for Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse with the premium edition revealed in December. Much of the content in the premium edition is physical, with most of the in-game extras being earned by purchasing the game by March 22. After waiting 15 years to get their hands on the game, there will be many fans out there that opt to pre-order the game, with anticipation for the franchise the highest it has been for a long time.
The new story trailer gives players a preview of the game's storyline, alongside a brief look at the game's mechanics. Shown in the trailer is the Photo Mode, which is becoming more and more common in modern gaming. Given the fact that Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is a game about photography, the feature feels right at home here. The trailer also reveals a variety of costumes for players who purchase the game by March 22, including the Ruka Limited Edition "Fox Mask" white and red costume, and Misaki Limited Edition "Fox Mask" black and scarlet costume, among others. It's not the first piece of exclusive content Koei Tecmo has announced for the game, announcing the remaster of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will feature a Dead or Alive costume for players to use.
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is huge for fans of the franchise. Until now, the has only been available in Japanese, meaning this release is the first Western localization of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. 15 years is a long time to wait, but the franchise is known for its long wait before localizations, so for many, this is business as usual.
The Fatal Frame franchise is a huge name in the horror community. Despite this, the series hasn't sold as well as many of its counterparts in the genre. This is likely due to the original Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and the most recent entry Maiden of the Black Water being only available on the Wii and Wii U, respectively. This exclusivity has massively restricted the franchise in terms of audience, although now Koei Tecmo is surely hoping that a multi-platform release will help to make the franchise more mainstream. This will be the developer's second attempt at a remaster, after Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water's 2021 attempt got average reviews.
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse launches on March 9, for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
