Summary
- Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a popular DLC known for its 80s/90s satire and gameplay.
- Despite no news on a sequel, fans have expressed interest in more Blood Dragon content.
- A potential Blood Dragon 2 could explore Rex Colt's backstory, expand on animal-related mechanics, or draw from the 2023 animated series.
After the successful and popular third numbered entry in the franchise, Ubisoft shortly followed it up in 2013 with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. The DLC may have seemed outside left field at first, but Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon has since garnered a reputation as one of the best and most enjoyable pieces of content in the series. Its neon-soaked satire of an 80s/90s action movie and cartoon mash-up married to Far Cry 3 mechanics was widely liked, and since its release many fans have been wanting more of what Blood Dragon offered.
Over ten years have passed since Blood Dragon, along with little news about Far Cry 7, the presumed next entry, coming from the developer since 2021's FC6. Still, Blood Dragon's appeal endures and though there hasn't been any word on one, there are some interesting ways to imagine how a sequel or another title set broadly within the world could best deliver on its potential.
A 2014 post by creative director, Dean Evans, seemed to show a wallpaper with the title Blood Dragon 3: Vietnam War 2, though nothing regarding it was officially acknowledged, and the tweet was to promote the vinyl release of Blood Dragon's soundtrack.
Why Now Is the Time for a New Far Cry: Blood Dragon Game
Though it was a one-off, 2013's Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon might just be the series' best path forward, and a sequel is long overdue.

What a Potential Far Cry: Blood Dragon 2 Should Be Like
Far Cry: Blood Dragon Has Much More Material to Mine
As a send up of classic action works, Far Cry: Blood Dragon was incredibly self-aware and not afraid to lean hard into this. Sergeant Rex Power Colt is tasked with tracking down his former commanding officer gone rogue, Colonel Sloan, in a post-apocalyptic USA. Rex was voiced by Michael Biehn, well-known for his roles as Corporal Dwayne Hicks and Kyle Reese in Aliens and Terminator. It was an excellent choice, and Biehn brought his best, with Rex often breaking the fourth wall to lampoon genre tropes as well as Ubisoft's open-world design, which even in 2013 had become something of a sticking point.
But Blood Dragon also had some solid world building, and the story ended on a cliffhanger. Rex defeats Sloan along with his army of cyborgs and titular dragons, becoming attached to Sloan's former assistant, Dr. Elizabeth Darling. All seems well until the final moment as Darling turns towards the camera with sinister glowing eyes before the screen fades to black and the credits roll. There is thus a lot more that could be done with Blood Dragon's elements.
How a Far Cry: Blood Dragon 2 Could Take the Ball and Run With it
There are two more obvious narrative angles a possible Far Cry: Blood Dragon sequel could take. One would be to pick up immediately after the above, and show fans what became of Dr. Darling and Colt. It could also go the other way and follow Rex's time prior to those events when he and Sloan were still on good terms and fighting together in the war that devastated Earth. A different option would be to play off the animated Netflix series, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, telling another new tale using the same characters and setup. It might even take cues from Far Cry 5's Lost on Mars DLC, sending fans to the planet to perhaps fight Omega Force again, or some new alien threat.
For how it can expand on previous mechanics, Ubisoft need look no further than another experimental entry in the series, Far Cry Primal, and its use of animals. Players got a taste of riding one of the dragons into battle during Blood Dragon's conclusion, and a sequel could repurpose Primal's design to let fans tame a bunch more cybernetically altered beats throughout the whole experience. These are just a few of perhaps the most promising paths and natural jumping-off points to build upon the over-the-top 80s action absurdity if the studio ever considers a Far Cry: Blood Dragon 2.
