Each Life/Class in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time has its own equipment. Combat Lives use weapons such as swords and staves, Gathering Lives use tools for collecting resources (ex: Axe), and Crafting Lives' tools can only be used during crafting minigames.

You'll collect basic weapons/tools when you reach Fledgling rank in any Class. They won't have any skills and will always be ordinary ranking. To get a Good or Great rank on your gear in Fantasy Life i, you'll need the right Crafting Life for the job.

Gathering and Crafting Lives

Which Lives Can Make Tools, Weapons, etc.

In Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, you'll have 14 different Lives to choose from. A Life is basically a Class where you learn different skills that can be used in the overworld. Fantasy Life i has three categories for Classes:

Life

Gathering

Woodcutter, Miner, Angler, Farmer

Crafting

Carpenter, Blacksmith, Alchemist, Tailor, Painter, Cook

Combat

Paladin, Mercenary, Hunter, Magician

The Painter Life and Farmer Life are not readily available at the start of the game. You'll need to progress through the main story to unlock them.

As their category indicates, Crafting Lives such as the Carpenter Life allow you to make various tools, weapons, and armor from materials you obtain through Gathering Lives. Thus, when it comes to making Good/Great/Top Quality gear, you'll need to put some effort into your Crafting Lives and Gathering Lives.

Specifically, you should focus on these Lives:

  • The Miner Life allows you to break open the ore deposits you'll see in each overworld of Fantasy Life i. You'll want to raise your Miner level and get stronger tools and skills to break open the higher-leveled deposits.
  • Woodcutter arms you with an axe to hack down a variety of trees to collect different types of wood that can then be turned into materials to make tools.
  • Tailoring is sometimes required for making cloth materials that are used in certain armor recipes, such as a Cape.
  • Carpenter Life is how you make tools/equipment as well as furniture for your Base Camp and House.
  • The Blacksmith Life uses minerals you get via the Miner Life to create ingots, which can then be used to make swords and other 'metallic' tools/weapons.

How to Get Excellent in Crafting Minigame

How to Get Good Quality

To create Good, Great, and Top Quality gear, you just need to interact with a Crafting Station. Each Life has its own HQ/base in Eternia Village. It's also recommended you equip stronger tools. For example, try using an Oak Saw instead of the 'borrowed' saw you received at the start of the Carpenter Life fledgling quest.

When you select an item to craft, you'll notice the Crafting Life icon next to a number at the bottom of the screen. This number indicates the Recommended Crafting Skills. On the left screen, you'll see your Crafting Skills. To ensure a better tool, you want your Crafting Skills to be close to this level or higher. Your Crafting Skills can be enhanced by leveling, unlocking skills in the Skill Tree, or by equipping a tool with a high Crafting Skill number.

Crafting Minigame Explained

Once you've selected your tool and crafting recipe, you'll be thrown into a minigame where you have to select the correct 'station' in time with the button prompts. You'll have a set number of turns that requires you to all given actions within the time limit. This number appears in the top-right corner of your screen. The time limit bar is in the middle, and it will also display the next station/prompt. To complete a prompt, you need to tap, hold down, or repeatedly tap the action button.

At the end of the minigame, you'll receive a ranking of Failure, Done, Good, Great, or Perfect depending on your performance.

You'll get a Good Quality craft item by doing any (or all) of the following:

  • Make sure your Crafting Skills are near/equate to or exceed the crafting recipe's Recommended Crafting Skills number.
  • Get Great and Excellent scores during the minigame. Avoid Good and avoid running out of time.
  • Using a tool of a higher rank (ex: Fine) or higher quality (ex: Good). Sometimes higher rank/quality tools come with skills that can extend your crafting time, etc.

Also, keep in mind that a tool's Rank is not the same as a tool's Quality. When you choose a weapon or tool to craft, you'll be able to select from Ordinary, Fine, or (if you unlocked it) Notable. While a Fine tool with no quality is better than an Ordinary tool with no quality, it's not always better than an Ordinary tool with a Good Quality. Furthermore, if you're trying to craft Good Quality items for quests, you should just stick with the Ordinary Rank.

After you start gathering Strangelings and return them to normal, you can have them help you with crafting. This will boost your Crafting Skills for that session, and you can switch between characters during the minigame.

Fantasy Life i How to Increase Affinity
Fantasy Life i: How to Increase Affinity

Players need to increase their Buddies' Affinity levels to unlock all their skills in Fantasy Life i, so here's how.

Crafting Skills to Level Up

You should be using the Skills menu for each Crafting Life. Nodes contain Skills that extend crafting time, add more Skill Points, and even unlock special moves that can auto-complete lower-leveled crafting recipes. It's also recommended you work on unlocking the Spin and Hold nodes, since these take longer to complete than simply tapping the action button.

Using Auto-Complete will not give you high-quality items (ex: gear with Good Quality) or give you more items (ex: Logs).

Best Equipment to Upgrade First

Generally, you should focus on getting Good quality tools such as the Saw (Carpenter), Hammer (Blacksmith), and Needle (Tailor). Because all three Crafting Lives make materials and equipment, it's highly recommended you have tools that will increase your total Skill number.

Next, you should work on forging stronger weapons, mainly for whichever Combat Life you prefer. If you like the Magician Life, then craft some Fine Pine Rods and aim for good quality. Tools, weapons, and armor with good/great/top quality marks will come with additional skills, such as elemental damage/protection, enhanced SP, and more.
