In Fallout Shelter, you will progress your Vault and unlock more rooms to build as you level up. These rooms will cover everything your Dwellers will need to survive, such as power, water, and food.

While most of these rooms take up small blocks of the underground space, merged rooms will double in size. As you can customize the assortment of the rooms in your Vault, you may find yourself wanting to merge your rooms for any reason such as aesthetic purposes or making your Vault easier to navigate. For this reason, knowing how to do so will certainly come in handy.

How to Merge Rooms in Fallout Shelter

Luckily, for players looking to expand rooms into a double-sized space by merging, this is a simple task. To merge rooms in Fallout Shelter, you will need to build two rooms of the same type next to each other in a horizontal space. This will automatically merge both rooms into a double space, increasing the amount of Dwellers you can have assigned to this facility.

To upgrade your room into a double room, you will need to ensure that both rooms are on the same level, so you may need to upgrade one or the other beforehand to match. For example, if you place a level 1 Living Quarter next to a level 2 Living Quarter, these two single rooms won't merge until you bring the second level 1 Living Quarter to level 2 through the Upgrade button.

If you feel the need to expand your double spaces even further, then you can turn them into a triple room by simply building another room of the same kind on either horizontal side of the double-sized room. When it comes to workers each room expansion can hold more Dwellers than the last:

  • single rooms can hold two Dwellers
  • Double rooms can hold four Dwellers
  • Triple rooms can hold six Dwellers.

As each level of ground has three room spaces on each side of the elevator, it can be a good idea to only place rooms of the same type next to one another. This way, you will have the space for two triple rooms on each level, enabling you to navigate the different rooms of your Vault with much more ease. This layout can help improve your vault planning, and aesthetics, or even help with the ability to find the Mysterious Stranger in time, so feel free to try it out for yourself.
