Summary
- Work-in-progress Fallout: New Vegas mod plans to add rideable horses for quicker travel in the game.
- Modding community continues to innovate and push the game's engine after 14 years.
An upcoming mod is set to add rideable horses to Fallout: New Vegas, giving players new options to traverse the iconic Mojave Wasteland upon its release. Fallout: New Vegas was undoubtedly missing a way to travel at a quicker rate without simply using fast travel, and this mod will address that perfectly.
Despite being almost 14 years old, Fallout: New Vegas continues to impress with how far its modding community can push its game engine. Like other titles in the Fallout series, modders for New Vegas have continued to innovate, with many mods bringing the game up to modern standards in plenty of different ways, whether it be visuals or gameplay. Recently, there was even a large Fallout: New Vegas mod that added a new companion to the game, building on an already stellar area of Obsidian Entertainment's 2010 RPG. Even with the release of newer Fallout titles, the modding community for New Vegas shows no signs of slowing down.
Twitter user Xilandro posted a video of the work-in-progress mod, showing the Fallout: New Vegas mod in action. The clip itself is pretty simple, with the player running around in circles on top of the horse. However, the animations are a real highlight here, with the horse's movement looking like it could be from a modern release. If used alongside some powerful Fallout: New Vegas graphics mods, this could make it look even more impressive. Further in the thread, Xilandro also posted some footage of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion's horse gameplay, which only highlighted how good their version of the feature looks in Fallout: New Vegas.
Upcoming Fallout: New Vegas Mod Adds Rideable Horses
Unfortunately, the mod isn't yet released to the public. When asked by another Twitter user about a potential release date, Xilandro said, "fingers crossed this year," so it may not be long before one of the best RPGs ever made has an excellent new method of transportation. It appears the Xilandro had cars in development at one point, although they decided to drop them in favor of what they describe as a "far more fitting means of transportation." The idea of cars in Fallout: New Vegas is definitely fascinating, but horses allow for much more lore-friendly roleplay potential, so it's understandable why they took this route.
With Bethesda currently working on The Elder Scrolls 6, the calls for a Fallout: New Vegas-esque title are loud at the moment. Just recently, Fallout: New Vegas' director Josh Sawyer spoke of the possibility of a franchise return, leaving the door open in the future. However, if a Fallout spin-off is to be created before Bethesda can make the fifth mainline title in the series, it's doubtful it will come from Obsidian, which has its own slate full at the moment with the development of Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2.
