The Fallout franchise has long been celebrated for its enthralling factions and characters, addictive gameplay, and immersive narratives, but no game is as universally celebrated as Obsidian Entertainment and Bethesda Softworks’s Fallout: New Vegas. The fourth mainline Fallout game and spiritual sequel to Black Isle Studios’ Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas was built from Fallout 3’s first and third-person gameplay but set in the western United States, similar to Fallout 1 and 2. Despite Fallout: New Vegas’ widespread praise for its complex storylines, it never received a follow-up and no other Fallout game has been set in the west since. However, recent rumors have suggested that New Vegas may soon receive its long-deserved sequel.

Fallout Game Development Rumors Explained

In the recent 73rd episode of the YouTube-based Friends Per Second podcast, Video Games Chronicle journalist Jordan Middler claimed that Microsoft and Bethesda are currently developing multiple Fallout games. While the inevitable Fallout 5 was already presumed to be slated on Bethesda’s timeline, likely coming after the release of The Elder Scrolls 6, the announcement of multiple Fallout projects in development is unexpected. However, Middler did note that most of these Fallout projects are still in their early development stages and that it would be a while until players can get their hands on them. One game in particular that Middler claimed is in development is Fallout: New Vegas 2.

While Fallout: New Vegas 2 and other Fallout games in development are currently unconfirmed, several other rumors have suggested that Bethesda is working on Fallout projects alongside their other properties, such as the long-rumored Fallout 3 remake. With the critical and financial success of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered and Fallout 3 being the game developed after the original Oblivion, a Fallout 3 Remastered may be the next Fallout game to be released. Similarly, a Fallout: New Vegas 2 may be in development following the success of Amazon Prime’s Fallout series, which followed up on many storylines established in New Vegas and led many players to return to or try New Vegas for the first time.

The Potential Development and Hurdles of Fallout: New Vegas 2

With Microsoft having previously acquired both Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment, it could direct Bethesda and Obsidian to collaborate again to develop Fallout: New Vegas 2. Obsidian has already been developing successors to Fallout’s world design and gameplay with The Outer Worlds series, so Microsoft and Xbox could let Obsidian develop New Vegas 2 possibly after the release of Fallout 5.

This would mirror the release of the original Fallout: New Vegas following the debut of Fallout 3, though Obsidian may be allowed to use Unreal Engine instead of Bethesda’s Creation Engine 2. While neither engine functions perfectly, there have been more notable issues with games using Creation Engine, such as Fallout 76 and Starfield, compared to Obsidian's use of Unreal.

Amazon Prime’s Fallout series has its second season slated for a December 2025 debut, and it’s already been renewed for a third season. However, it’s unknown how long the Fallout series will run for, and this could impact the development and release of Fallout: New Vegas 2. Fallout season 2 is already confirmed to focus on the New Vegas Strip due to its tease at the end of season 1, and set images and leaks of season 2 suggest a larger focus on the New California Republic and Caesar’s Legion. Unless Fallout season 3 jumps to another region of the United States, large-scale development on Fallout: New Vegas 2 may have to wait until the show ends to build off where the series left the New Vegas area.

Fallout: New Vegas 2’s Potential Narrative Designs

If Microsoft wants to make a direct follow-up to Fallout: New Vegas, it could go in two directions: either taking place before the Amazon Prime Fallout series around the same time period as Fallout 4, or as a sort of sequel to the Fallout show. If Xbox were to go with the former, it could allow Bethesda and Obsidian to better follow up on plot beats from the original Fallout: New Vegas, but they would be limited by the inevitable destruction of Shady Sands and subsequent crumbling of the NCR. If Xbox were to go with the latter, it could potentially attract many of the Fallout show's fans to truly try Fallout games for the first time, as they’d be interested to see the show’s plot continued in a game.
