Fallout 76 has gained an audience years after its messy release. The successful Fallout TV show, as well as steady updates, has revitalized the post-apocalyptic multiplayer game. The recent Skyline Valley and Milepost Zero updates have added more areas to explore along with changes to make the game easier to jump into.
Fallout 76 has more survival mechanics than previous games. You have to manage your character's hunger and thirst alongside the regular upkeep of your health/weapons. There are also diseases that your Vault Dweller can catch while exploring, fighting certain enemies, and eating food. A gas mask is an important part of keeping your character healthy. This guide will explain where you can find gas masks and how they keep your character safe in Fallout 76.

For those seeking more stories in Fallout 4's Commonwealth, these mods bring countless more hours into the wasteland.
Why Do You Need a Gas Mask?
Damage and Disease Prevention
There are many diseases you can catch in Fallout 76. These will apply debuffs to your character's stats until you cure them. Some areas have toxic air that can give you diseases simply by walking around them.
The Ash Heap region to the south of Vault 76 is polluted by old mining gear and fires. You can contract Sludge Lung by exploring this area and its many mines. The swamps of the Mire and Cranberry Bog regions on the eastern side of the map have some poisonous plants that can also give you diseases.
Gas Masks and other face coverings will prevent the toxic air from affecting your character, and it's important to have one equipped when exploring these areas. The game will warn you when you've entered an area with toxic air. Keep one on to avoid catching these annoying airborne diseases. You can wear gas masks, along with many other types of helmets and head coverings, for a unique post-apocalyptic look.
The Best Gas Mask Stockpile
Knife Edge
Knife Edge is an abandoned raider camp. This location has four gas masks you can find. The small camp is to the east of The Crater, but be careful; there will usually be a trio of radscorpions in the area.
Two gas masks can be found on the top of the central tower, with a note to stock up on masks. Two more can be found in the tent behind the tower on a shelf. The camp has the highest number of masks in any one area, so visit it to get some for your whole squad.
