A retro gaming enthusiast has managed to play Fallout 4 on a 1970s JVC Videosphere TV using a PS5. Fallout 4 is the latest mainline game in the post-apocalyptic RPG franchise from Bethesda and was released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2015. In 2024, Fallout 4 received a next-generation patch, bringing the open-world epic to the current-gen line of consoles.

Thanks to the release of the next-gen update, as well as the hugely popular Fallout TV show, Fallout 4 is currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity. As gamers head back to the Wasteland, one player has taken inspiration from the game’s 1940s aesthetic to play Fallout 4 in a unique way.

A user by the name of xtr3m3z has taken to Instagram to show how it was possible to link their PS5 up to the 1970s black and white TV to play Bethesda’s Fallout 4. As the space helmet-shaped CRT TV doesn’t have an HDMI port, several cables and converters had to be used to achieve this. Firstly, the HDMI cable from the PS5 is plugged into an AV converter before the RWY cables are attached to an AV-to-RF converter. This allows a final RF cable to be plugged into the JVC Videosphere. For those unaware of how pre-HD TVs work, the enthusiast had to tune the TV to the right frequency so the TV could pick up the PS5’s signal before they could begin playing.

Fan Finds a Unique Way to Play Fallout 4

To some, this may sound like a lot of work just to play Fallout 4 in black and white, but the result is stunning. The JVC Videosphere was a unique TV when it was released, and the retro-modern design lends itself perfectly to Fallout 4’s version of the future. Eagle-eyed viewers of the video will be able to spot a similar TV in the player’s home during the game’s opening moments.

As xtr3m3z has shown, there is still love for the franchise, with players waiting to see what’s next for Bethesda’s RPG. Although Fallout 5 was first confirmed by Todd Howard in 2022, it will be developed after Elder Scrolls 6. With the Skyrim follow-up seemingly years away, it's going to be a long wait for the next Fallout game.

Still, that’s not deterring fans from heading back to the Wasteland for another playthrough. Fallout 4 players are still finding hilarious ways to die in the game, with a recent player getting into trouble after an ill-timed fast travel. The unlucky player recently shared a clip where they fast-traveled to the West Roxbury Station, only to be taken out by a Suicider Mutant almost instantly.
