Fall Guys has gotten a plethora of recent changes in the new update, to the point where the game is now only barely recognizable. Being free to play, the game has readjusted its user interface and added plenty of new and longer challenges. Additionally, it introduced the long-awaited batch of new mini-games following the delay between this update and the beginning of the game’s sixth season. With much more to unlock and a player base that can now potentially consist of anyone in the world, Fall Guys is in a terrific position. It may not be as popular as it was a couple of years ago, but the developer knows how to keep its game going.
A lot was brought into Fall Guys with this new update. There are different kinds of challenges, the game modes are equally becoming more diverse, and there are new components to stages that will make for an even richer level editor when that feature is finally released. These changes obviously indicate a brighter future for the game, but while all the new additions to Fall Guys have been nice, they should not overwhelm the game and distract it from its core gameplay.
How Technical Issues Will Make or Break Fall Guys
A meticulously well-programmed experience is essential to Fall Guys’ survival. Being a game reliant on multiplayer, any glitch or technological issue that is bad enough can render the game unplayable. While there have been some issues with connecting to servers like all multiplayer games, the quality of Fall Guys has remained consistent since the game’s launch. This might seem like players have nothing to worry about, or this could mean that something else could potentially lead to the game’s downfall if left unchecked.
The upcoming level editor is a feature that remains both anticipated and inevitable even if the developer had not announced it. The minigames in Fall Guys are aesthetically varied and players are greeted with new gimmicks to torment them each season. By now, there are over 50 minigames, and almost each of them has a unique premise. Unless it ends up barebones, the level editor will incorporate every type of minigame, every kind of obstacle, and all the possible styles and color palettes. Such an ambitious task could easily tear the game apart if the execution isn't top-notch.
Aside from the level editor, there are no other big updates planned for Fall Guys, but that does not mean the game is not susceptible to becoming directionless. With all the various challenges and rewards, there are suddenly more things to do, but that can easily backfire. For now, the game is content with providing the core experience without bombarding players with additional distractions, and that could easily change. Due to the conversion to free-to-play now preventing the developer from depending on people buying the game to get money, this could easily slip into desperate attempts at forcing microtransactions or other new games and modes without properly polishing the game.
At its core, it is a goofy party game with cartoonish platformer mechanics. If the new content makes the game deviate from this idea, then it is a red flag. Otherwise, Fall Guys will remain strong.
Fall Guys is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
