Playground Games, the developer behind the Forza Horizon series, is developing the new Fable title with assistance from Eidos Montreal. Third Kind Games had already confirmed they were assisting Playground Games with Fable, and fans are eager to see what Eidos Montreal will contribute to the highly-anticipated fantasy title.
Eidos Montreal was founded in 2007 and acquired by Square Enix in 2009, where it developed games like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Marvel's Avengers, Marvel's Guardian of the Galaxy, and the critically acclaimed Shadow of the Tomb Raider. In 2022, Square Enix sold Eidos Montreal to Embracer Group. Still, the situation seemed dire as Embracer conducted major layoffs at Eidos Montreal, consequently leading to the likely cancelation of a new Deus Ex game.
Eidos Montreal took to Twitter to show they're supporting Playground Games in the ongoing development of the new Fable, slated for release in 2025. Fans celebrated Eidos Montreal's announcement and believe the Deus Ex developer can add much to Xbox's classic RPG franchise. So far, it's unclear what part of development Eidos Montreal is assisting with specifically. Third Kind Games assisted Playground Games in the past with the development of Forza Horizon 4, responsible for optimization and performance. If Third Kind Games is handling the same thing this time around, Eidos Montreal may be assisting with something entirely different.
Eidos Montreal is Co-Developing the New Fable Game
Another heavyweight developer assisting in the production of Fable is Ryan Clark, former Baldur's Gate 3 producer. Clark announced on LinkedIn that he had become a senior producer on the Playground Games team responsible for Fable. Having the producer of Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most-awarded games in the industry, on the team is good news for the Fable franchise and its fans.
The Fable reboot was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase 2023 with a gorgeous cinematic, revealing the return of the franchise that saw its last release with Fable 3 in 2010. The trailer also showed that a female protagonist will lead the new Fable, and even though there was some controversy about that fact on social media, many fans also expressed their excitement to control a heroine in this classic fantasy world.
Fable was among many games displayed at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. Fable will be released in 2025 for PC and Xbox consoles and will be available on Game Pass from Day One. Compared to other games in the Latitude project, which aims to bring Xbox games to other platforms, Fable is reportedly not being considered for this strategy, which indicates that, at least on its launch date, Fable will be exclusive to PC and Xbox consoles.
