Black Panther is one of the most beloved franchises in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Chadwick Boseman's untimely passing left a huge void, but Marvel Studios may have finally found a replacement.

Boseman debuted as T'Challa, aka Black Panther, in Captain America: Civil War (2016). He starred in his solo movie in 2018. The film, directed by Ryan Coogler, was a massive hit and became a global phenomenon, grossing over $1.3 billion. It also earned multiple nominations at the 2019 Oscars, including Best Picture, a rare feat for superhero movies. However, Boseman passed away in August 2020 after battling colon cancer for four years. Marvel initially decided not to recast the character. The studio proceeded with the Black Panther sequel by handing the mantle to his sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright). They also honored Boseman by writing his death into the story. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the narrative revealed that T'Challa died of an illness without specifying it. It's been five years since Boseman succumbed to cancer, and rumors are rife that Marvel is eyeing younger actors to portray the much-loved character – Black Panther.

Several names have been linked to the Black Panther franchise, including Aldis Hodge (Black Adam, Underground Railroad), Trevante Rhodes (Mea Culpa), Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge, Lanterns), and Damson Idris (Farming, Outside the Wire). Idris recently appeared on Today to promote his upcoming action-adventure sports movie F1, which also stars Brad Pitt. During his appearance at the show, host Craig Melvin invited him to a "Yes or No" game, where the latter would ask questions and he would answer with a "Yes or No." Melvin asked Idris about the speculation that he could be cast as the next Black Panther. When asked if he had any conversation with Marvel Studios, Idris's initial reaction was to groan before giving a vague response. "Yes — no!" he said and smiled. Melvin clarified that "The yes-no means yes." "Uh, it could mean no," Idris quipped while smiling. Since Melvin can't seem to get a straight answer from the young actor, he asks whether Idris would accept it if Marvel offered the role. "Yes," he said without hesitation.

Although it isn't official yet, many fans are supportive of the idea of Idris taking over the Black Panther franchise. According to them, he was their top choice to portray the King of Wakanda. Some also called out Coogler and Marvel Studios for his casting. While a number are still hesitant because Idris' response isn't clear, many are convinced that his vague answer is indeed a "yes." And they are already excited to see him in a Black Panther suit.

Idris has always been among the actors rumored to be the next Black Panther. Although his response about the casting sounds vague, it's clear that there has been a discussion between him and Marvel. He probably couldn't say it straight because the deal is not yet done, or he's been trained, just like the other Marvel stars, to deny until Marvel Studios makes the official announcement. Idris has the charisma and commanding presence that mirrors that of Boseman. In Snowfall, he portrayed Franklin Saint, a complex, powerful, and morally nuanced character. He delivered the role with intensity and certain subtlety with equal strength, which are key traits for a leader like Black Panther. He is also a versatile actor and has proven his emotional range and ability to transform his persona and be in character. Additionally, he has African heritage, being born to Nigerian parents, so he can bring authenticity to the character.

Black Panther 3 is expected to hit theaters in February 2028.
