EA and Codemasters' F1 racing simulation game series won't be releasing a new entry in 2026, pushing its next game into 2027 and breaking a 17-year-long streak in the process. That means EA has more content on the way for F1 25, but fans of the series eager for an entirely new game will have a long time left to wait.

Games in the F1 series have been listed among some of the most realistic racing simulations ever made. Codemasters launched the first game in the series in 2000 for the original PlayStation console and PC, releasing related games F1 Championship Series 2000 and F1 Manager in the same year. One new game followed every year through 2003, and after a hiatus, fans have been able to dive into at least one new F1 game per year since 2009.

Codemasters Comments on Whether F1 Games Could Come to Nintendo Switch 2

Codemasters' F1 racing game series' developers are in discussion about the Nintendo Switch 2 as a possible new platform for its games.

F1 Racing Series is Skipping Out on 2026

However, that 17-year streak will end with F1 25, which was released in May. EA has confirmed that the series will be taking a break from releasing a new game in 2026, but it will only be for a year, as a 2027 title is still part of its plans. Codemasters' senior creative director Lee Mather wrote in the statement that the developer is still "fully committed" to the racing game franchise, stating that F1 25 has been an incredible success, and easing potential worries of fans. Mather called the game planned for 2027 a "strategic reset" for the F1 series, saying it will offer players more gameplay options than past entries in addition to providing a different look and feel.

Instead of EA releasing a new game, F1 25 will be receiving a paid expansion in 2026. As it's just been announced, there aren't many details available regarding what will be included in this expansion, although the website states that players should anticipate more teams, drivers, sporting regulations, and cars in F1 25. The cost of this expansion has not been revealed either, but it's likely to be much lower than that of a brand-new game, although players will need a copy of the base game, an EA account, and an internet connection in order to play.

For the next full entry in the series, EA and Codemasters are aiming to embrace the modern era of motorsports with the addition of new features that they believe will complement the parts of previous games that players appreciate most. Although fans will have to wait to see how this strategy will play out, the announcement states that the 2027 title is being developed in partnership between EA and all professional F1 teams.
