A big Sony event is starting this week, and already people are speculating about the possibility of this being where the PlayStation 5 is finally unveiled. Given that the PS5 is coming out this year but has yet to be officially revealed, it’s clear that something is going to have to happen soon if Sony wants to have enough time to hype the next-gen console. The question people are asking now is if this is this event is in fact that something.

Tomorrow, January 14, a new event called “Experience PlayStation” will come to New York City’s Sony Square, the public showroom Sony uses for “showcasing innovations in products, music, movies and gaming.” According to the listing on Sony Square’s website, the event will be running all the way until February 16, and will let people in from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM each day to “celebrate 25 Years of Play with a collection of titles on PS4 and PSVR.”

That’s all the listing states, so while nothing so far is officially linking the event to a possible PS5 reveal, the timing is very suspicious. For months now, rumors and leaks have been pointing towards Sony unveiling the next PlayStation next month, and all of them so far, including the most recent PS5 leak, have pointed to a specific day: Wednesday, February 12. That would put it squarely in the final week of the Experience PlayStation event, potentially signalling the PS5’s reveal and a possible marketing blitz as its final part.

Again, this confirms nothing, but it does skew closely to how Sony has unveiled consoles in the last few years. The PlayStation 4 was announced on a Wednesday in February back in 2013, and in 2016 its mid-gen upgrade, the PS4 Pro, was announced at an event in New York City. So there is a precedent for all of this to add up to a PS5 reveal in the NYC area in a month’s time.

The only unusual aspect is the venue itself. Sony hasn’t used Sony Square for a reveal of this magnitude before, but that could merely be logistics. The showroom only opened in 2016, and the NYC venue Sony had used for this type of event before, the PlayStation Theater, closed down recently. Through the process of elimination, it’s possible then that Sony Square is the next best place to host the PS5’s official reveal, though we won’t know for sure if that will be the case until February 12 comes along.

The PlayStation 5 will launch in the 2020 holiday season.
