Summary

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduce a large number of new pocket monsters, including powerful critters that significantly impact the competitive meta.
  • Some of the new Pokemon added in the expansions remain shiny-locked, with no current means for players to obtain their alternate color versions.
  • In addition to non-Legendary Pokemon, there are also multiple Legendary Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet whose shiny forms are unavailable, including the game's mascots Koraidon and Miraidon.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduced the biggest number of new pocket monsters since Gen 5 games, adding plenty of critters capable of wreaking havoc on the competitive meta, reshaping it across several different regulations. The Gen 9 era has seen some incredible critters hit the field, starting with Dondozo and Tatsugiri turning the concept of double battles on its head and then featuring some of the best Special Attackers in the series with Gholdengo and Flutter Mane. Although Pokemon Scarlet and Violet added even more new Pokemon in The Indigo Disk and The Teal Mask, some of them remain shiny-locked, with no means for players to obtain their alternate color versions.

There are many shiny-locked Pokemon in the series, but while some of them eventually got their shiny forms added to the games in some way, such as exclusive timed events in mainline titles or Pokemon GO, several were not so lucky. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet add quite a lot of these creatures to the list, and it's still unclear what exactly will happen to them and if their shinies will ever see the light of day - especially considering that most of them are Legendaries.

It's worth noting that Ghimmighoul and Gholdengo will be on the list because they are currently unobtainable as shinies, but there was a timed event featuring Chest Form Ghimmighoul in Tera Raids, with the rare chance that it would be a shiny. This was a one-time-only addition, however, and no new Ghimmighoul events were added to Gen 9 games.

Every Shiny-Locked Gen 9 Pokemon

Every Non-Legendary Shiny-Locked Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet

As of the release of both The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk expansions, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet feature a total of 20 shiny-locked Pokemon. The following critters are non-Legendary Gen 9 Pokemon whose shinies are unobtainable in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet:

  • Ghimmighoul
  • Gholdengo
  • Walking Wake
  • Iron Leaves
  • Bloodmoon Ursaluna
  • Gouging Fire
  • Raging Bolt
  • Iron Boulder
  • Iron Crown

These are strange cases for the series, too, as Walking Wake and Iron Leaves are currently only available in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Tera Raids, and despite being part of The Indigo Disk Pokedex, they cannot be caught elsewhere. Similarly, Gouging Fire and Raging Bolt are exclusive to Pokemon Scarlet, whereas Iron Boulder and Iron Crown are exclusive to Pokemon Violet, but all of them are on the DLC Pokedex. On top of that, they are the only Paradox Pokemon without shiny forms available, although their designs exist and have been leaked via datamining.

Every Legendary Shiny-Locked Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet

Likewise, there are multiple Legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet whose shinies are unavailable. These include:

  • Ting-Lu
  • Chien-Pao
  • Wo-Chien
  • Chi-Yu
  • Koraidon
  • Miraidon
  • Okidogi
  • Munkidori
  • Fezandipiti
  • Ogerpon
  • Terapagos

The Indigo Disk's Terapagos is the latest addition to the series, but it too can't be found as a shiny, even if players reset the encounter multiple times. The same holds true for every other Legendary Pokemon on the list, unfortunately including Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's mascots Koraidon and Miraidon. The list is likely to expand even further, however, as soon as next week.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's epilogue will release on January 11, and it has been datamined as the chapter that will allow players to get their hands on Gen 9's own Mythical Pokemon - Pecharunt. This critter has been leaked a long while ago, but with the release of The Indigo Disk, its appearance, stats, Ability, and movepool all leaked online for fans to see. Pecharunt will most likely be shiny-locked in the epilogue, and it will probably stay this way for a long while, like other Mythical Pokemon before it.
