Summary

  • Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed includes gyroscopic motion controls for PlayStation and Nintendo, but not Xbox players.
  • The remake of the classic Wii game retains the magic paintbrush mechanic.
  • The September 24 release will offer console pre-orders early access and unique Mickey costumes.

Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, the remake of the classic Wii game staring Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, will support gyroscopic motion controls, though only on some consoles. PlayStation and Nintendo fans will be able to take advantage of this feature in the THQ Nordic-produced game, mirroring the controls of the original Wii game, but it seems like Xbox players won't be so lucky.

The original Epic Mickey was a commercial success despite mixed reviews. Releasing in November 2010, the game was primarily a classic 3D platformer, but it also incorporated the use of a magic paintbrush, which allowed players to use automatically replenishing supplies of paint and thinner to remove or replace objects in the game's world using the Wii's built-in motion controls. The remake was announced in February 2024 during a Nintendo Partner Direct and is being developed by Purple Lamp, the studio known for its work on SpongeBob SquarePants games The Cosmic Shake and Battle for Bikini Bottom.

'Epic Mickey' Developer Diary Takes Gamers Through the Disney Archives

In a new developer diary, Warren Spector and the team at Junction Point talk about getting to experience the Disney archives in order to draw inspiration for 'Epic Mickey.'

The original Epic Mickey never came to Xbox or PlayStation consoles, most likely due to the paintbrush mechanics' reliance on motion controls. A few months ago, Epic Mickey: Rebrushed senior producer Pan Schröder spoke about how the development team had to revamp the remake's controls to remap the original game's motion control to thumb sticks while preserving the game's original feel, as the upcoming game is scheduled for release on all major consoles, as well as PC. Players will still have to option to use motion controls, but the standard controllers for the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One don't support motion controls, which will limit that functionality to Nintendo and PlayStation consoles.

Epic Mickey: Rebrushed Will Support Motion Controls for Nintendo and PlayStation

A new trailer for Epic Mickey: Rebrushed debuted on August 2 during the THQ Nordic Showcase 2024, showing off new gameplay features and improvements to visuals, even though the original Epic Mickey was one of the best-looking games on Wii. While the remake has been designed to capture the feeling of the original Epic Mickey, new reports from THQ Nordic and Purple Lamp state that Disney's flagship mascot will have some new tricks up his sleeve, including sprinting, dashing, and a ground pound maneuver, which should speed up the game's pacing.

The release date for Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is scheduled for September 24. Additionally, console players who pre-order will receive 24 hours of early access to the game, as well as three unique costumes for Mickey. The 24-hour early access will not be available for those who pre-order the game on Steam.
