Summary

  • Cat Quest is the latest mystery game being given away by the Epic Games Store, replacing Cursed to Golf and itself being replaced on December 29th.
  • The Epic Games Store mystery game promotion is expected to last until January 10th, coinciding with the ongoing holiday sale, but could potentially end sooner.

The newest mystery game to be given away by the Epic Games Store is Cat Quest, an open-world RPG set in a world where everything, to some degree, is feline or animal-related. It replaces the last Epic Games Store holiday game, Cursed to Golf, and in turn, will be replaced on December 29 at 10 am CT by a new game.

Right now, it seems the Epic Games Store mystery game promotion will last through January 10 before returning to normal on January 11. This is because of the ongoing Epic Games holiday sale, which lasts through then, and the two often coincide. Of course, it's possible that Epic Games could end it sooner too. While one could argue that the overall size of the games has dipped since the Christmas period, which saw three major AAA games released back to back, fans can reasonably hope to see a few more AAA games scattered throughout the promo, perhaps around New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

That doesn't mean they should sleep on feline game Cat Quest, however, as its cute presentation doesn't hide a deep and intricate game beneath it. In it, players must save their sister from the evil Drakoth, explore a huge overworld map, complete tons of side quests in the process, and acquire loot from many-a-dungeon delve. It features real-time combat, which lets players use the nimbleness of the cat in melee combat or wield ancient cat-related magic. Players can choose their loot and equipment to supplement their playstyle as well, and overall, it's an excellent addition to the EGS Mystery Game list.

Overall, Cat Quest marks the tenth game given away so far this year. If the Epic Games Store promo continues to January 10, as it would seem, then fans would be receiving around 23 games this year. That's quite a bit, and it's hard to argue with free.

For now, fans who aren't interested in Cat Quest can wait and see what is coming tomorrow on the Epic Games Store. It's hard to say for sure, but there could be a hint or two hidden in tomorrow's wrapping paper. Notably, this year the hints have been much harder to deduce, if detectable at all.
