The Callisto Protocol has been officially revealed as the Epic Games Store's latest freebie, available from today until December 25. The 2022 survival horror experience is the second AAA title that has been featured in this year's holiday season giveaway on the Epic Games Store.

The ongoing promotion started on December 11 and has been rotating new freebies daily since December 18. The most recent titles given away to Epic Games Store users were Paradise Killer and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Epic's 8th Holiday Season Free Mystery Game Is Now Available

Epic has now officially revealed the eighth mystery game of its holiday season promo: The Callisto Protocol. The big-budget sci-fi horror game is free to claim for exactly 24 hours, until December 25, at 8am PT / 11am ET / 5pm CET. This is the first title from the ongoing holiday giveaway that was already treated to a 100% discount on the platform in the past. Specifically, Epic Games Store users were able to pick up The Callisto Protocol for free during a week-long period in late August 2024.

The debut title from Striking Distance Studios, The Callisto Protocol is a narrative-driven survival horror game directed by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield. December 3 marked its third anniversary, with the game originally launching to mixed reviews, as underlined by its "Fair" rating on OpenCritic, based on an average score of 67 and a 41% reviewer recommendation rate. Critics praised The Callisto Protocol's AAA production qualities and atmosphere, but while simultaneously lambasting its repetitive combat and technical issues.

Though The Callisto Protocol received an overall mixed response as a spiritual successor to Dead Space, this 100% discount still makes it an appealing option for fans of sci-fi survival horror who have yet to try it. The game marks the second AAA release featured in the ongoing EGS holiday promotion, following Hogwarts Legacy, which was available to claim for a full week earlier this month.
