With gaming growing more and more expensive as a hobby as the months and years go by, storefronts like the Epic Games Store keep even the most strapped-for-cash gamers playing through sales and free game giveaways. The Epic Games Store in particular is a valuable resource for many players, as it offers weekly free games that rotate every Thursday at 10 AM CT. This helps all kinds of players find unexpected gems at no extra cost, and it serves as a great way to kill time while waiting for bigger releases.

Those who are hoping for big, AAA titles like last year's Dragon Age: Inquisition giveaway shouldn't hold their breath, though. Epic's free games aren't known for being the most highly sought-after releases very often. The promotion typically highlights independent games, and this has its own benefits, as more obscure games get a chance to shine and entice players by being free for just a week. August 14's free games in particular highlight two colorful and cartoony titles with Hidden Folks and Totally Reliable Delivery Service.

Hidden Folks Proves Wonder Can Be Just a Click Away

In the spirit of books like Where's Waldo, indie developers Adriaan de Jongh and Sylvain Tegroeg invite players into a monochrome world where all kinds of people live in detailed hand-drawn environments. It's a simplistic game, but the multiple interactions bring charm and character to the act of searching that's bound to make plenty of players smile. Players who enjoyed the many games from Amanita Design that were given away this year will definitely want to pick up Hidden Folks for its features including:

  • 32 areas with their own unique items
  • 300+ things to find
  • Hints for the items that are easily accessed from the bar at the bottom of the screen
  • Hilarious sound design literally from the developer's mouth
  • Aesthetically pleasing monochrome, sepia, and "night" modes to play in
  • A completion time of 15 hours for those looking to find everything
  • Community-translated language options

Hidden Folks has been noted as one of the best games of 2017 by a few outlets, and one of the common complaints from players and critics is that they want more when Hidden Folks is finished.

Epic Games Store Free Game Totally Reliable Delivery Service Explained

A player flying a plane while another hangs onto the wing in Totally Reliable Delivery Service

Totally Reliable Delivery Service offers a similar experience to Hidden Folks except in color, 3D, and with the chance to share the laughs with friends. Players who have already experienced Carry the Glass or the previous Epic Games Store free game Moving Out should feel right at home with this sandbox ragdoll simulation game. Totally Reliable Delivery Service is yet another title that challenges players to handle its wonky physics, but instead of handling specific levels, there's an entire city with tons of resources to use to fans' advantage or to self-sabotage for comedy.

Totally Reliable Delivery Service's Features

  • Local and multiplayer options.
  • Vehicles and machines to use to play around or assist deliveries
  • Character customization
  • 2 and a half hours for the main campaign, but 11 hours for 100% completion
  • Online multiplayer mode that encourages players to get the game for free together

The version of Totally Reliable Delivery Service that's being given away is the standard edition. The only difference between it and the deluxe is all the DLC. Players who enjoy Totally Reliable Delivery Service after getting it for free can purchase the DLC packs to support the developers.

Compared to last week's hot-blooded Road Redemption and strategic 112 Operator, the freebies planned for August 14 give off the same vibes as Saturday morning cartoons. There's a lot within these two titles that should make them easy pick-ups for those who enjoyed games that were given away months to almost a year ago. Those who enjoyed (or missed out on) the last time these types of experiences were given away for free should act fast to add them to their libraries, as there's no telling when - or if - they'll be offered as Epic Games Store free games again in the future.
