Since its early access release back in January 2024, Enshrouded has received major updates based on community feedback. New gameplay mechanics, improved combat, more immersive dungeons, and more have been steadily added to the game over the past year. According to the Enshrouded 2025 Roadmap released recently, the team has plans to add many more. One quality-of-life feature that's missing, however, is the ability to deposit backpack items into multiple chests without having to open each one individually. Terraria has long implemented this feature, and Enshrouded would be wise to follow suit.

Survival crafting games like Enshrouded strive to achieve a delicate balance between tedium and fun when it comes to inventory management. There is a sense of satisfaction in building an organized base, sorting items into dedicated chests and having a clear picture of what goes where. Making the task too time-consuming and tedious runs the risk of making the players feel like they're completing chores instead of playing a game, which is a guaranteed way to lose interest. On the other hand, making the task too easy runs the risk of making the gameplay loop feel pointless and boring. An easy way to know which features work and which don't is to look at the successes of the past, and given Terraria's beloved community status, there is no better survival game to emulate.

How Enshrouded Can Implement Auto-Deposit The Same Way As Terraria

In Terraria, players can press a single button to deposit all items in their inventory that aren't equipped to nearby chests that already have items of the same type within them. So if a chest contains a stack of Ebonwood and the player's inventory also has Ebonwood, pressing this button would automatically deposit all Ebonwood to the chest on top of the existing stack. This basically eliminates the time players have to spend depositing and sorting stacks of individual items to multiple chests. Once an item is placed inside a chest, it automatically becomes the default destination of future automatic deposits.

Enshrouded Already has the Ability to Automatically Drop-Off Items to Chests

Currently, Enshrouded does have the ability to automatically deposit items of the same type from the player's inventory to chests by pressing Shift + R while the chest's inventory is open. It shouldn't be especially hard to expand this function and make it so that instead of having to go up to each chest to trigger the effect, players can do it the Terraria way and have all items deposited automatically. Magic chests that can be accessed indirectly already exist in the game; implementing the same function to the player's backpack shouldn’t be too large of a jump.

Affinity Tags or Strict Chests Would Make Quick Deposit Into Nearby Containers Simple

Enshrouded already has plans to implement a feature that would allow players to give name tags to individual chests to know what goes where. A natural evolution of this idea is to add 'Affinity' tags, similar to how it works in Path of Exile 2 stash tabs, which would allow players to assign certain material types to those chests. A chest with the 'Equipment' Affinity tag, for example, could take all unequipped armor, weapons, rings, and clothing when the auto-deposit button is pressed.

Automatic Depositing Could be a Universal Feature or Locked Behind Progression

While the most convenient method for players would be to implement the automatic drop-off feature wholesale, there are other ways to implement it in Enshrouded that don't trivialize the existing gameplay loop.

Magic Chests

In Enshrouded, magic chests serve as a means of allowing players to directly use their contents in workshops in a large radius around their location. An upgraded version of the magic chests, perhaps called the Super-Large Magic Chest, in keeping with the current naming scheme, could have automatic loot drop-off in a radius around it as a feature. This way, the existing balance of the game would not be broken, and players would have additional incentive to craft higher tier versions of chests to unlock this QoL upgrade. Having to hunt for Shroud Cores in Enshrouded to get access to these special chests would be more than worth it.

Dedicated NPCs

Enshrouded already has a lot of villager NPCs that serve as crafters and vendors. Adding helpers on top of that wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Perhaps players could do special quests for certain NPCs out in the world to recruit them as logisticians around the base to keep it clean. Then, players could dump all items into these NPCs' inventories and have them sort these items into dedicated chests. Regardless of whether NPCs, chests, or another approach are the the method used, hopefully this quality-of-life addition is made to Enshrouded in the near future.
