The indie scene has proven to be the true testing ground for horror gaming, and last year's Enigma of Fear is further evidence of this. Indeed, Dumativa's retro-soaked, mixed-media horror-mystery adventure highlights the competitive nature of the horror genre in the indie sphere, and fans of the macabre and eerie willing to branch out shouldn't sleep on it.

Enigma of Fear follows a familiar but compelling premise: protagonist Mia's father has gone missing in a remote supernatural area, and it's up to the player to locate him and bring him to safety. As one would expect, nothing goes according to plan, and the result is a creepy, open-ended experience that blends elements of survival horror, metroidvania, and investigation wrapped up in a surprisingly stunning package. With fascinating lore to uncover, vicious monsters to take on, and dark secrets to illuminate, Enigma of Fear is an easy purchase for anyone seeking a breath of fresh air in the increasingly crowded horror games market.

At the time of writing, Enigma of Fear sits at a 95% Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.

Enigma of Fear Is a Spooky, Aesthetically Striking Horror Extravaganza

How Enigma of Fear Balances Scares and Beauty

Before even booting it up, it's clear where Enigma of Fear's strengths lie: in its one-of-a-kind aesthetic. Although it features pixelated character models channeling the aesthetic of late-2000s flash games, the rest of its visual identity is defined by a mix of 2D sprites and 3D models that run the gamut from PS1-inspired to suspiciously modern-looking. Like so many of the best HD-2D games, Enigma of Fear's clever recontextualizing of 2D art elements makes for an alluring visual feast, especially when more advanced lighting and other VFX come into play. But unlike, say, Octopath Traveler, which uses a similar style to evoke a sense of quaint charm and whimsy, Enigma of Fear uses it to further disorient the player.

One might assume that such relatively simple graphical components would make Enigma of Fear less grotesque and unsettling, but this is not the case. The game manages to feature some truly disturbing and bizarre enemies (which have such charming titles as Blood Zombie), many of whom are defined by a bloody or tortured appearance. There's combat in the mix as well, and Enigma of Fear doesn't shy away from showing blood, gore and general violence, which is somewhat surprising when set against its deceptively innocent-looking character models. This is to say nothing of the game's broader narrative framing, which can foster even greater feelings of discomfit and unease.

Enigma of Fear's Deduction-Based Gameplay Makes It More than a Bog-Standard Survival Horror

Although there's combat and high-stakes action during many parts of Enigma of Fear, it will take brains as well as brawn to make it to the end credits. As players explore the game's main playable area, known as the Perimeter, they will need to solve numerous puzzles, uncover evidence, and piece together clues to make forward progress. Making this process even more compelling and unique is the game's open-ended, player-driven structure: Enigma of Fear is open-world, allowing for non-linear progression through its narrative and gameplay beats.

Enigma of Fear definitely made a significant splash when it hit the market last November, but one could argue that it has yet to reach the apex of its popularity. Naturally, it being only available on PC holds it back from attaining maximum mainstream success and relevance, but even so, the game deserves more eyes on it; as a masterful concoction of tension, engaging gameplay, and non-linear storytelling , Enigma of Fear is a must-play for indie horror enthusiasts.
