In The Elder Scrolls: Castles, traits are unique characteristics that influence a subject's performance. Each trait has varied effects depending on whether the character is a staff member, warrior, or ruler. For instance, Envious is a poor trait for a worker because it reduces productivity, but it’s beneficial for a ruler, as it boosts the castle’s material gains.
The Elder Scrolls: Castles - How to Customize Subjects
You can change your subjects’ appearance in The Elder Scrolls: Castles, but do not expect any dedicated character customization menus.
With twenty traits in The Elder Scrolls: Castles and more on the way, choosing the best ones for your subjects can be tricky. To make it easier, we've put together a tier list of the top traits that you should aim to get for your people.
Best Traits in The Elder Scrolls: Castles
- Leader: Boosts productivity for other workers at the same workplace. Leaders can occasionally activate free Potions of Speed, accelerating production.
- Mighty: Enhances the subject's skills in the Oil Press, a vital resource, and makes them strong in melee combat.
- Tribal: Subjects with this trait work more efficiently when family members are nearby, making groups of Tribal workers highly productive.
- Considerate: Improves performance in the Kitchen, the game’s second most crucial resource.
You can breed subjects with similar traits to reproduce a specific feature.

- Tribal: When a Ruler has it, every castle resident feels more productive when their loved ones are around.
- Perceptive: it can enhance the performance of the Mill and Sewing Table.
- Leader: A Ruler with this trait motivates workers through their decisions, helping maintain kingdom happiness.
- Charming: Charming Rulers increase overall joy in the kingdom.
- Envious: While Envious Rulers align everyone’s happiness with their own, they significantly boost the castle’s material gains.
- Sophisticated: Rulers with this trait are less vulnerable to assassination, as they tend to keep most workers content.
There is no way to customize a character’s trait in The Elder Scrolls: Castles.
Worst Traits in The Elder Scrolls: Castles
- Devious: Although skilled with daggers, Devious subjects often make enemies, increasing their chances of assassination.
- Envious: These subjects cause discord and dissatisfaction at work, resenting others who are more productive.
- Haunted: Followed by a ghost that sometimes substitutes them at work, Haunted characters constantly annoy their coworkers.
- Heartless: Heartless subjects lower happiness in the workplace and disrupt production.
If you have a subject with too many bad traits, exile them to make more room in the castle for new characters.
