Summary
- The Elder Scrolls 6 will still not likely be released until 2028 or possibly later.
- Bethesda recently released Oblivion Remastered, which could tide players over until TES6.
- A Morrowind remaster following Oblivion's could be the best move to keep interest up until TES6 is complete.
Time continues to chug along as players wait for The Elder Scrolls 6. Approaching seven years since its initial reveal, the only thing still really known about The Elder Scrolls 6 is that it has been in some stage of development throughout that time. Developer Bethesda hasn't provided many updates about the highly-anticipated next entry in the franchise, but it's widely assumed it will be at least a few more years before it's ready.
But fans of the series just got a huge treat, as, after numerous high-profile leaks and rampant rumors, the cat is officially out of the bag for one of gaming's worst-kept secrets in recent memory. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastere d was just officially announced and subsequently swiftly dropped on April 22. And given this turn of events, there's more reason than ever for Bethesda to turn next to Oblivion's preceding entry, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, to keep fans further sated while the studio continues work on the sixth major installment.
Oblivion Remastered is available now on Xbox Game Pass as well as PC and PS5.
The Elder Scrolls 6 Should Continue a Positive Trend From Past TES Games
The Elder Scrolls 6 should look to its past for inspiration and bring back this fantastic opportunity for deeper story and roleplaying.
The Elder Scrolls 6 Still Being Years Away Could Now Have a Silver Lining
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered Should Be the First of a One-Two Punch
Even if it wasn't as huge of a surprise as the studio intended, Bethesda dropping Oblivion Remastered now is still a savvy move on its part. The most recent mainline entry in the franchise, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, remains perennially popular, with players still sinking hundreds, if not thousands of hours, into it in the fifteen years since it's been out.
But now that fans are able to dive into a modern version of the 2006 classic with Oblivion Remastered, it provides a perfect stop-gap that can serve to keep gamers similarly occupied ahead of The Elder Scrolls 6, while letting any fans who didn't experience the original do so with all the latest graphical fidelity and a variety of quality of life touches. Bethesda can then follow through on this momentum by doing the same for Morrowind.
The fan-made Skyblivon project remaking Oblivion with Skyrim's assets and engine, which has been in the works since 2012, is also on track to release in 2025.
The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind Getting a Remaster Next Would Further Alleviate the Wait for TES6
As well-liked as Oblivion is, and the remastered version is certainly a welcome decision, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is arguably more beloved by the fanbase, having set the template for Oblivion as well as numerous other RPGs in its wake. Many have already been calling for it to receive a remastered or remade version for a while. And since it's been over twenty years since its release, and now that Oblivion has been given the treatment, there is more cause than ever for Bethesda to do the same next for Morrowind.
Although possible, it's currently unlikely that TES6 will release next year, with various predictions and speculation putting it further out to 2028 or even 2030. Giving fans the ability to experience updated and polished versions of these two older, but seminal, Elder Scrolls games in short order would be a winning combination. Bethesda has proven that it can handle such a project while it also moves forward with TES6, and a Morrorwind remaster would be the perfect double bill to make the wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 even easier to swallow, giving players the best versions of these two highly influential and fan-favorite titles before the next one finally releases.
