Leveling up skills in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered can be an exercise in patience, especially magic skills like Restoration, since they are limited by how much magicka a character has and what spells they know.
Luckily, there are ways to make the grind go faster by gaming the system and taking advantage of the mechanics Bethesda put in there to the player’s advantage. Here is the optimal way to go from Novice to Master Restoration in under an hour.
How to Level Up Restoration Quickly in Oblivion Remastered
The fastest way to power level is by using custom spells tailor-made for each rank of Restoration. Magic skill experience gain in Oblivion Remastered is directly tied to how much Magicka a spell consumes. So, the goal is to create the most magicka-intensive Restoration custom spell that the player character can cast, and spam it repeatedly. Contrary to logic, it doesn’t matter if the Restoration spell actually ‘restores’ anything. You can cast a ‘Restore Health’ spell at full health, and you will still gain full experience. This is great for power-leveling as you don’t have to worry about finding ways to damage yourself before casting Restoration spells.
In the original Oblivion, players could power level any magic skill by spamming the lowest level spell of that school. Oblivion Remastered changes that. Now, magic skills experience gain is tied directly to how much Magicka is consumed for a spell. A spell that costs 100 Magicka will level up the related magic skill 10x faster than one that costs 10 Magicka.
After testing, the optimal spell effect to use when leveling Restoration is ‘Restore Health.’ This comes pre-learned by every character in the game from level 1. After you unlock the Altar of Spellmaking and the ability to make custom spells, you can level up Restoration quickly by creating four custom spells, one for each Rank of the Restoration.
Here are the spells:
|
Restoration Rank |
Spell Effect |
Range |
Magnitude |
Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Novice (0-25) |
Restore Health |
Self |
12 |
1 |
|
Apprentice (25-50) |
Restore Health |
Self |
25 |

|
Journeyman (50-75) |
Restore Health |
Self |
50 |
1 |
|
Expert (75-100) |
Restore Health |
Self |
100 |
1 |
The strategy is simple. Here is a step-by-step:
- Create a custom spell according to the table above.
- Cast until out of magicka.
- Wait one hour to recover magicka back to full.
- Repeat.
- After reaching the next rank in Restoration, create the next custom spell.
- Repeat.
To level Restoration from Level 0 to 25, the most optimal way is the one described above. However, for players who do not have access to the Altar of Spellmaking early, the spell
Heal Minor Wounds is almost as good. It also has the benefit of being available to all players right from the start of the game, making early leveling very easy.
Equip enchanted Robes of Fortify Magicka to increase the amount of Magicka you can spend per attempt.
How to Unlock Altar of Spellmaking (Custom Spells)
There are two ways to access an Altar of Spellmaking in Oblivion Remastered.
- Arcane University: After reaching Apprentice Rank in the Mages Guild through the related questline, the Arcane University becomes accessible. Altars of Spellmaking can be found in the Praxographical Center.
- Frostcrag Spire: After unlocking the Frostcrag Spire player home east of Bruma, players can buy an Altar of Spellmaking upgrade by buying Magetallow Candles Box from Aurelinwae in the Imperial City Market District.
