Mysticism is one of the hardest magic schools to level up in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. Its spells are often esoteric in nature, and most are not suitable for spamming, unlike Conjuration or Destruction spells.
To level Mysticism quickly, players will need to rely on a predetermined set of spells that can be used to rapidly gain Mysticism skill experience without having to rely on external factors. Here’s the breakdown.
How to Increase Mysticism Level Fast in Oblivion Remastered
The fastest way to power level Mysticism in Oblivion Remastered is by using custom spells with the highest possible magicka cost that the player can cast. Custom spells can only be created using an Altar of Spellmaking, which can either be unlocked through the Mages Guild questline or via Frostcrag Spire (details in the next section).
For Mysticism, the easiest spell to level with is called Detect Life. This is because Detect Life doesn’t need a specific target to work.
Minor Life Detection (Detect Life on Self) can be purchased from Calindil at the Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City Market District for a small sum of gold. After you’ve learned Detect Life, head to an Altar of Spellmaking to bring up the custom spell menu. You will need to create four Detect Life custom spells, one for each rank of Mysticism. The table is as follows:
|
Mysticism Rank |
Spell Effect |
Magnitude |
Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Novice (0-25) |
Detect Life |
100 |
8 |
|
Apprentice (25-50) |
Detect Life |
100 |
21 |
|
Journeyman (50-75) |
Detect Life |
100 |
51 |
|
Expert (75-100) |
Detect Life |
100 |
120 |
For Novice Mysticism, you can replace the custom spell with Minor Life Detection for roughly the same result.
If you’re at the Apprentice rank in Mysticism, for example, you would create a Detect Life spell with 100 Magnitude and 21 Duration and spam it repeatedly until you run out of Magicka. Then, wait an hour, and repeat. After you reach Journeyman (Level 50 Mysticism), you would then create the next custom spell according to the table and repeat.
How Does Magic Skill Leveling Work in Oblivion Remastered
Magic skill leveling works a little differently in Oblivion Remastered compared to the original Oblivion. In the original version, magic skill experience gain would be directly related to the number of times a spell is cast. In Oblivion Remastered, magic skill experience gain is instead dictated by how much Magicka is spent during casting. This means a hundred spells that each cost 1 Magicka to cast and one spell that costs 100 Magicka to cast will give the exact same experience gain.
The optimal way to level magic skills in the Remastered version is by creating custom spells with as high of a Magicka cost as possible. Spam the custom spell until the Magicka bar is depleted, wait one hour (to refill the bar), and repeat.
How to Make Custom Spells in Oblivion Remastered
Custom spells in Oblivion Remastered can be created through an Altar of Spellmaking. There are only two locations where you can find Altars of Spellmaking in the entire game. They are:
- The Arcane University: Advance to the Apprentice Rank in the Mages Guild questline to gain access to the Arcane University services, including the Altars of Spellmaking in the Praxographical Center.
- Frostcrag Spire: East of Bruma is a player home called Frostcrag Spire. One of the possible upgrades for the Frostcrag Spire is to activate a dormant Altar of Spellmaking by using a Magetallow Candles Box. Magetallow Candles Boxes can be bought from Aurelinwae in the Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City Market District.
