The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered might be a new version of a popular and beloved title, but it's still an old game, and some of the UI and related mechanics can be awkward. One of the most useful tools players can use to make navigating easier is the Shortcuts feature.

Oblivion Remastered Daedric Armor
Oblivion Remastered: How to Get Daedric Armor Early

Daedric armor is one of the high-quality pieces of equipment you can find in Oblivion Remastered. Here's how to get it early in the game.

It's an easy feature to miss, especially for new players or those who haven't played in several years, which might cover most of them now. As the character progresses and acquires better gear and potions, along with useful items like scrolls and Repair Hammers, it becomes essential to access them quickly.

Players will use a few different controls depending on whether they have a keyboard or a controller. Refer to the top left and right of the screen to see what buttons and keys are used to search through the various tabs and Inventory items. The jury is out on which is better. The keyboard is convenient with the use of a single key, but others might argue that the controller is quicker.

The Shortcuts Wheel In Oblivion Remastered, Explained

Access And Use Essential Items

  • Access the Shortcuts via the Inventory.

As is the tradition with RPGs, the character is going to acquire a lot of stuff in their bags, and some of it will be easy vendor trash or something valuable that can be stowed away. Other items will be equipment that the character can wear, which includes armor, accessories like jewelry, and weapons.

There are several utility items that the player will want to access quickly without having to scroll through their Inventory or Spell list, and this is what the Shortcuts wheel is for. Players have 8 available slots to use, which might sound like a lot, but they fill up fast. To effectively make use of the Shortcuts wheel, players will need to choose the items or spells that are the most important to them and their character's build.

How To Assign Shortcuts In Oblivion Remastered

Use A Keyboard Or A Controller

  • Use the default settings with controllers and keyboards or use the options in System to create a custom setting.

When the player opens their Inventory, one of the options at the bottom of the screen will include how to open the Shortcuts wheel. For keyboard users, it's often R, and controllers have a Menu button.

Press it to open the Shortcuts wheel on the right side of the screen.

  • Use the Tabs to search through the categories of various items, weapons, and spells.
  • When the item is selected in the Inventory, press a number on the keyboard between 1 and 8 to assign it a Shortcut.
  • As long as the Shortcuts wheel is open, it will assign objects that are selected in the Inventory. You can then use Esc to close the Shortcuts menu.

Controller users don't have access to the series of numbers as on a keyboard. These particular players access the Shortcuts via the Inventory and scroll through the Shortcuts wheel instead.

Consume Potions, Use Scrolls, Or Switch Between Weapons

  • Choices depend on the character's unique build, whether they're magic users, fighters, rogues, or various combinations.

Weapons

Most players would prefer to have two weapons handy, one for melee fighting and something for targets at a distance. Assign each to a Shortcut, and you can swap between them in a pinch. For those who specialize in several different weapons, all of them can be assigned a Shortcut, but that leaves less room for other equally important items.

Special Items

There are some useful tools that players should also add to their Shortcuts, like Repair Hammers and the Mortar and Pestle. Once assigned, the Shortcut key directly opens up the utility screen for these items, allowing the player to mix herbs or repair damaged equipment.

Potions

These might be assigned before the weapons, depending on the character build. There's a wide variety of potions in Oblivion Remastered, and the player can both find and make them. Every adventurer needs at least a few health potions nearby, and other concoctions can restore Agility, Strength, and other attributes.

Spells

The character's spells aren't found in the regular Inventory unless they're in scroll form. You can open the Magic menu to see the list of incantations available and set them to a Shortcut the same way as any other item. Potions that restore Magicka, and Spells take priority over weapons in this case.
