RPGs usually don't shy away from letting the player turn to a life of crime, but they typically apply some negative consequences for performing any unsavory actions. These can range from a hostile world and fewer opportunities for rule-breakers to outright jailing, and the same holds true for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.
There are a lot of criminal acts you can perform in the game, but all of them come with an associated bounty, which will put you up against the city guard. Whether it’s murder, stealing, pickpocketing, or trespassing, there is a simple but unfortunate consequence for all of them. If you're wondering what happens if you commit a crime in Oblivion Remastered and how you can get out of jail after being caught, this guide has all the info you need.
All Oblivion Remastered Difficulty Levels Explained
There are multiple difficulty levels to choose from in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, but what exactly do they do?
What Are Crimes in Oblivion Remastered?
Stealing items or horses, pickpocketing or lockpicking, trespassing or jailbreaking, and assaulting or killing a non-hostile NPC are all actions that are considered crimes in Oblivion Remastered.
Each of these actions will incur a bounty on your head depending on the severity of the crime. Murdering someone is the most severe crime, though self-defense is allowed. The second most severe crime is stealing a horse. Stealing items can get you a really high bounty as well, depending on the value of the stolen goods.

What Happens When You Commit A Crime in Oblivion Remastered?
Once a bounty is placed on your head, you will become a target of the guards. Whenever you’re within range, they will try to engage you in a talk, giving you three options. Go to jail, pay the fine, or resist arrest.
The fine is always equal to your bounty. If you don’t have enough gold to pay the fine, you won’t see the dialogue option. You can check your bounty in the Details section of your Character menu.
- Go to Jail: If you go to jail, you can break out or serve your sentence by sleeping in the bed in your cell. Depending on the price of the bounty on your head, you will lose a few levels in random skills.
- Pay Bounty: If you choose to pay off your bounty, the guard will take you to the castle where you will pay the fine. In the process, you will lose all of your stolen goods, even if they aren’t relevant to the crime you committed.
- Resist Arrest: In the case of resisting arrest, the guard will become hostile and start attacking you, continuing until you yield, at which point they will offer you the same options as before.
The items in your inventory that are stolen are indicated by the red hand next to them. You can avoid losing them by storing them in a secure location, such as your house.

Players who want to make The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered even better should check out the following mods.
How To Yield and Stop The Guards from Attacking You in Oblivion Remastered
When you resist arrest, the guards will get out their weapons and rush towards you, attacking you with the intent to kill. However, you can stop them from attacking you if you yield to them. Doing so will trigger the arrest dialogue from the guard if they accept your yield.
To yield, you simply need to press the block button (Right Mouse Button for PC) and the interact key (E) at the same time while near the guard. They might not accept your yield in certain situations, such as if you’re in the middle of a jailbreak.
If you kill a guard while resisting arrest, it will count towards your bounty.

Varla Stones are similar in purpose to Soul Gems, with a slight difference. Here's how to get and use them in Oblivion Remastered.
How to Break Out of Jail in Oblivion Remastered
When you’re arrested, you will wake up in your cell with nothing but a single lockpick and some rags as clothes. To escape, you need to open your cell’s door somehow, get your possessions, and exit the jail without dying. Here’s what you should do:
- Create a quicksave to make sure you have more than one chance to open the locked door with your single lockpick.
- Use the lockpick to open the door. If you break it, reload your save. Alternatively, you can pickpocket a passing guard to get the jail key. If your pickpocket attempt is detected, the guard will become hostile and enter the cell to kill you, and will not accept any yield.
- Sneak out of the dungeon and get your possessions from the Evidence Chest near the exit. If you come back to pick them up later, all your possessions will be marked as stolen.
- All the guards in the jail will be hostile if they detect you and won’t accept any yield. Escape as soon as possible or sneak your way out to achieve a successful jailbreak.
You will still have the same bounty on your head that you started with, plus some additional bounty accrued from the jailbreak if you’re successful, so there’s no real benefit to executing a jailbreak. Either resist arrest in the first place, or serve your sentence in its entirety.
