Of the six different schools of Magic in Oblivion Remastered, Illusion spells are some of the most varied. Illusion spells generally influence the perceptions of others, but the school also contains some of the most powerful spells in Oblivion, like those that can paralyze enemies or turn yourself invisible.
Oblivion Remastered: Best Defensive Spells, Ranked
Surviving in Oblivion Remastered will be impossible without a good defense. These spells will come in handy for most builds.
The best Illusion spells in Oblivion Remastered will embolden your allies, shut down spellcasters, send attackers fleeing back to their mums, and turn your worst enemy into your best friend. This guide to the best Oblivion Remastered Illusion spells recommends six options that grant some of the most useful effects in the game, as well as where you can purchase each Illusion spell.
6 Heroism
Requires: Apprentice of Illusion
- Heroism Effect: Rally 50 points for 45 seconds on target
- Base Magicka Cost: 33
- Heroism spell ID: 000AA034
Heroism is one of the best Illusion spells in Oblivion Remastered, but not necessarily for its usefulness in combat, social minigames, or otherwise. It requires you to be an Apprentice of Illusion to cast, but once you get it, you'll have acquired the easiest way to level up Illusion from 25 to 50.
The amount of XP you get for skills associated with each school of magic is based on the amount of Magicka spent to cast spells. Heroism costs a little bit more than its touch-based companion spell, Hero's Touch, and thus is the better option to quickly level Illusion from Apprentice to Journeyman.
You must have an ally to cast this spell on to level it up. The easiest way to do this is to progress the main quest to the point that you bring Martin to Weynon Priory, when he will start to follow you. Then, cast Heroism repeatedly on him. Rest as you run out of Magicka, and you'll level Illusion to the next mastery rank within minutes.
How To Get Heroism
To learn the Heroism spell, Oblivion Remastered players must purchase it from Ita Rienus at the Bravil Mage's Guild or the Mystic Emporium in the Market District of the Imperial City.
5 Hush
Requires: Journeyman of Illusion
- Hush Effect: Silence for 10 seconds on target
- Base Magicka Cost: 99
- Hush spell ID: 00027441
Throughout Oblivion Remastered, Magic damage and spells are abundant. Just about every enemy in the game can cast some kind of spell, whether it be a Destruction spell aimed at your face or a Bound Weapon that outscales anything else an enemy could come at you with.
Oblivion Remastered: How To Get 100% Reflect Damage
To reach 100% Reflect Damage, Oblivion Remastered players must find Reflect Damage gear and other sources of this effect.
To counter enemies' magical nonsense, learn the Hush spell, which will immediately Silence an enemy when they are hit with it. It is a Ranged spell, but it only costs 90 Magicka to cast. It's one of the best spells for Battlemage-type builds, who can use it to Silence an enemy before they charge in and crush a temporarily powerless spellcaster.
How To Get Hush
To learn the Hush spell, Oblivion Remastered players must purchase it from Ita Rienus at the Bravil Mage's Guild.
4 Grasp of Terror
Requires: Master of Illusion
- Grasp of Terror Effect: Demoralize enemies up to Level 20 for 30 seconds on touch.
- Base Magicka Cost: 441
- Grasp of Terror spell ID: 000A97D8
In Oblivion Remastered, players have access to a number of different spells that manipulate enemies, including a number of spells that inflict various amounts of Demoralize. Demoralize forces your enemies to flee from the battle in terror – and Grasp of Terror is the strongest of these spells, one that can Demoralize almost any target in the game on touch.
You must be a Master of Illusion, which is quite a feat in and of itself. But once you reach this highest height of the Illusion skill, all of your other Illusion spells will become cheaper to cast, and you'll be able to make enemies run away with a touch by learning Grasp of Terror.
How To Get Grasp of Terror
To learn the Grasp of Terror spell, Oblivion Remastered players must purchase it from Ita Rienus at the Bravil Mage's Guild or the Mystic Emporium in the Market District of the Imperial City.
3 Voice of Rapture
Requires: Journeyman of Illusion
- Voice of Rapture Effect: Charm 36 points for 30 seconds on touch
- Base Magicka Cost: 97
- Voice of Rapture spell ID: 000A97B0
Illusion magic is good for a lot of things in Oblivion Remastered, but one of the best reasons to focus on leveling your Illusion skill is to access its various Charm spells. The best Charm spell in Oblivion is Voice of Rapture, which will Charm a target for 36 points on touch without causing your target to become hostile.
Oblivion Remastered: Best Early-Game Spells, Ranked
Even before entering the Arcane University in Oblivion Remastered, players have plenty of great and useful spells to choose from.
When Charmed, NPCs will be more friendly, offer more intrigue, and offer better prices when trading. This effect lasts for about half a minute, and just casting it is often enough to make any NPC friendly enough to offer hidden dialogue.
Cast this on vendors to get better deals, or quest NPCs who don't want to talk to you to make them more receptive to your requests.
How To Get Voice of Rapture
To learn the Voice of Rapture spell, Oblivion Remastered players must purchase it from Ita Rienus at the Bravil Mage's Guild or Aurelinwae at the Mystic Emporium in the Market District of the Imperial City.
2 Shadow Shape
Requires: Journeyman of Illusion
- Shadow Shape Effect: Invisibility for 30 seconds on self
- Base Magicka Cost: 132
- Shadow Shape spell ID: 000A97BE
Invisibility is one of the most useful effects in Oblivion Remastered. When you are Invisible, enemies will lose track of your location, enemies will not become alerted to your presence, and you can safely sneak around just about anywhere you like without attracting attention.
Shadow Shape is far from the highest-tier Invisibility spell in Oblivion Remastered. However, its 30 seconds of Invisibility is just as useful as the minute and two-minute durations of the higher-tier versions. If you're close to running out, just cast the spell again – it's only 120 Magicka, which isn't much by the point that you will likely naturally reach Journeyman of Illusion.
How To Get Shadow Shape
To learn the Shadow Shape spell, Oblivion Remastered players must purchase it from Ita Rienus at the Bravil Mage's Guild.
Oblivion Remastered: Best Spellsword Build
The Spellsword offers the best of both worlds for players torn between warrior and mage in Oblivion Remastered.
1 Immobilize
Requires: Expert of Illusion
- Immobilize Effect: Paralyze for 7 seconds on touch
- Base Magicka Cost: 365
- Immobilize spell ID: 000A9839
Some of the most useful effects in combat are Paralyze effects. If you successfully Paralyze an enemy, they will freeze and collapse to the ground, allowing you to wail on them with your strongest Heavy Attacks or high-Magicka spells as they struggle to recover and get back up.
Immobilize hits a sweet spot between Magicka cost and the length of the Paralyze effect. A relatively large 365 Magicka cost is not as bad as the higher-tier Paralyze spell's near-500 Magicka requirement, and its 7-second duration is more than enough to get lots of hits in before an enemy gets back up (if they don't die while paralyzed, that is).
If you just want a way to control and interrupt enemies, try using Debilitate, which only Paralyzes for 3 seconds but costs a significantly less 112 Magicka. But if you want to freeze enemies for a long enough time to easily kill them while they are down, use Immobilize instead.
How To Get Immobilize
To learn the Immobilize spell, Oblivion Remastered players must purchase it from Ita Rienus at the Bravil Mage's Guild or from the Master-Wizard of the Arcane University, Raminus Polus. You must gain entry to the Arcane University before you can purchase spells from the guildmaster.
