Summary
- Early game spells like Water Breathing and Ease Burden are essential for inventory management and exploration
- Spells like Minor Life Detection and Touch of Rage provide strategic advantages for stealth and combat
- Destruction spells like Weak Fireball and Electric Touch offer effective damage output early on
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, like the original title, allows players to create their own spells once they have unlocked access to the Arcane University. This therefore allows the player to perform some incredibly powerful spells that can combine features to make some of the best magic possible.
Oblivion Remastered: Best Weapons To Enchant
Here's a list of the best weapons to enchant in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
However, in the early games of Oblivion Remastered, a player is unlikely to be able to easily walk into the Arcane University or have enough Magicka to be able to cast these powerful spells. There is still some great magic at the start of Oblivion Remastered that players should be sure to learn and cast often. These are by far the best early-game spells of Oblivion Remastered, ranked.
8 Water Breathing
Stay Underwater For Longer
- School Of Magic: Alteration
- Skill Level: Apprentice
- Effect: Breathe underwater for 30 seconds
- Cost: 43
While many of the best spells in Oblivion Remastered are spells that players can use to defend themselves, there is also a lot of magic that players can use while they explore Cyrodill. One great early-game spell that players should consider purchasing as soon as possible is the
Water Breathing spell.
As the name of this Apprentice Alteration spell suggests, when casting this magic, the player grants themselves 30 seconds of water breathing, which allows them to stay underwater for longer. Players can purchase this spell from either Edgar's Discount Spells, A Warlock's Luck, or Trayvond the Redguard from the Cheydinhal Mages Guild Hall.
7 Ease Burden
Players Can Hold Plenty More Items
- School Of Magic: Alteration
- Skill Level: Apprentice
- Effect: Players gain 50 points of inventory for 240 seconds.
- Cost: 35
One of the biggest issues a hoarding player may face in Oblivion Remastered is running out of space to carry every treasure they have found during their adventures. Thankfully, magic can be used to lighten the load, with Apprentice Alteration spells like Ease Burden being a perfect example.
When casting this spell for 33 Magicka, the player gives themselves an extra 50 weight to their inventory so that they can move without being encumbered. This effect lasts 240 seconds, giving players enough time to make their way to a nearby town to sell their various goods. Players can purchase this spell from a wide range of spell traders across Cyrodill, with Edgar's Discount Spells being one of the closest stores.
6 Minor Life Detection
Sense Enemies From A Distance
- School Of Magic: Mysticism
- Skill Level: Novice
- Effect: Detect enemies 60 feet away from the player for 10 seconds
- Cost: 15
Even for players that don't plan on going for a fully magic build, there are many useful spells that can benefit those that have instead planned a more stealth-like character. Many of these spells can be found within the Mysticism school of magic, with Minor Life Detection being a great early-game spell for those looking to creep around.
The Best Light Armor Sets in Oblivion Remastered, Ranked
A complete list of the best Light Armor pieces and sets in Oblivion Remastered.
The simple premise of Minor Life Detection does exactly as its name suggests. When cast for 15 magicka, the player can see a slight effect on the screen to signify when something is near them. This allows the player to prepare their shot before entering a room, as they already know where they are. Players can get this spell for free if they choose Mysticism as one of their major skills, otherwise Edgar's Discount Spells and Mystic Emporium are two of the closest stores to sell it.
5 Touch Of Rage
Cause Foes To Turn On One Another
- School Of Magic: Illusion
- Skill Level: Apprentice
- Effect: Frenzy those touched up to level 18 for 30 seconds
- Cost: 30
When playing at harder difficulties, players will find themselves relying on effects like Frenzy far more often. Touch of Rage is a Frenzy spell that will cause those touched by this magic to fight each other to the death. This is another great spell for those hoping to stay in the shadows, as players can cause their enemies to turn on one another without ever needing to draw a blade themselves.
Touch of Rage in Oblivion does come with some setbacks. First, Daedra and the Undead cannot be affected by any Frenzy magic, making it useless to use on them. This spell also only works until players start facing foes that are level 18 or higher, meaning they would need to purchase a stronger spell. However, while in the early-game of Oblivion, this spell will be incredibly helpful. The closest store selling Touch of Rage is the Mystic Emporium.
4 Weak Fireball
A Fire Spell That Continues To Burn
- School Of Magic: Destruction
- Skill Level: Novice
- Effect: Deal 5 points of fire damage in a 5-foot area that continues to damage for 3 seconds
- Cost: 12
The Destruction school of magic is one of the strongest for players looking for early-game magic that does a lot of damage. Besides the magic the player starts with, Weak Fireball is a promising spell that deals damage over time. While the initial 5 points may not seem like a lot, since the spell continues for an extra 3 seconds, a player has the potential of dealing 20 fire damage overall. Plus, this spell is great for hitting hard to aim at targets, since players can instead aim at the ground.
Players can't purchase this spell from a store, unlike the other magic mentioned. Instead, a player receives Weak Fireball from Adrienne Berene during the Skingrad Recommendation quest for the Mages Guild. Once this spell has been given to the player, they will have it permanently.
3 Electric Touch
Shock Damage Is One Of The Most Lethal
- School Of Magic: Destruction
- Skill Level: Apprentice
- Effect: Does 25 points of shock damage on touch
- Cost: 48
Continuing to focus on Destruction magic, those that are focusing on a magic-based character may find themselves able to use stronger magic a lot sooner than others at the start of the game. Electric Touch is an Apprentice spell which deals a high amount of shock damage to anything the player touches.

While this does require the player to be up-close to their target, when playing as a battle mage, this is hardly an issue as the player should have ways to protect themselves. There are few places in Cyrodill that sell this incredibly lethal spell, with the closest being the Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City.
2 Heal Minor Wounds
Close Up Wounds Without Needing Potions
- School Of Magic: Restoration
- Skill Level: Novice
- Effect: Restore 8 points of health
- Cost: 18
Some of the strongest early-game spells in Oblivion Remastered are the magic that players don't purchase but instead start with, no matter what they start the game as. Heal Minor Wounds may only restore 8 points to the player's health, but this can truly be the difference between life and death when taking on various enemies at the start of the game.
Restoration Magic can be a big help to players that want to save their inventory space for other things instead of carrying a bunch of strong healing potions. Players can then eventually purchase a stronger version of this spell to heal the bigger wounds.
1 Flare
A Simple But Effective Fire Spell
- School Of Magic: Destruction
- Skill Level: Novice
- Effect: Deals 6 points of fire damage to a target
- Cost: 11
Heal Minor Wounds isn't the only spell players start the game with, no matter what. Players are also given the Destruction spell known as Flare, which is by far one of the best early-game spells that players will likely fall back on repeatedly during their first couple of adventures in Oblivion Remastered.
With a cheap cost to cast, players can repeatedly through a flurry of fire at their enemies, dealing 6 points of fire damage to them on impact. Since players also don't need to spend more to earn this Destruction spell, it also means players can save their money for longer to pick higher-level spells once they have hit the right skill level for them.
