One of the first contracts that players can complete from the Dark Brotherhood involves locating and killing a Wood Elf by the name of Baenlin, all within his home in Bruma. While it might seem like a simple task to kill a small and fragile Wood Elf, Oblivion Remastered players will need to remember that there are certain rewards obtained by those who hit bonus targets for the Dark Brotherhood.

Vicente Valtieri has tasked players with killing Baenlin, but with a catch. Baenlin must be killed as if it were an accident, and Oblivion Remastered players can achieve this fairly easily, so long as they know what to do to start their journey of becoming a Dark Brotherhood mastermind.

How to Start the Accidents Happen Quest in Oblivion Remastered

speaking to vicente valtieri

In order to start the Accidents Happen quest, players must be a member of the Dark Brotherhood, and they must have completed the previous contract, A Watery Grave. Upon completing this contract, players can speak with Vicente Valtieri and ask for a new contract, where they will receive Accidents Happen as their second mission for the Dark Brotherhood.

How to Correctly Kill Baenlin in Oblivion Remastered

To begin, players are going to want to head to Bruma, where Baenlin's house can be found on the east side of town. However, players should wait until the hours of 8 PM and 11 PM to venture inside, as Baenlin will be in his chair, making for the perfect spot for his murder. Since players cannot be seen during the murder, the best way to enter the house is through the locked basement, found at the back of the house. Once players have entered the basement, feel free to create a quicksave just in case Baenlin or his manservant, Gromm, spot the player.

Head through the basement and take the stairs up to the bedroom on the right. On the east wall, players can access a hidden hatch to enter inside, where at the end of this small room, they can activate the mounted head fastenings. Activating the mounted head fastenings will cause the animal head trophy to fall onto Baenlin, killing him instantly. At this point, it's time to flee, but remember to stay in stealth or else players will be detected by Gromm and forfeit their bonus. To safely escape Baenlin's house, simply head through the basement door, and Gromm will be none the wiser.

All Rewards for Successfully Completing Accidents Happen in Oblivion Remastered

sufferthorn reward

If players managed to kill Baenlin by making it look like an accident, and by staying in stealth as to avoid detection and the killing of Gromm, then players will have earned themselves a unique enchanted weapon. On top of the 400 Gold (level dependent) that players receive from Vicente Valtieri and the Slayer rank in the Dark Brotherhood, players will also get the Sufferthorn Dagger as a bonus reward. The Sufferthorn Dagger has two unique abilities to use that might make stealth assassinations easier:

  • Drain Strength on Strike (12 Points)
  • Damage Health on Strike (25 Points)
