Warning: SPOILERS for Ranni's and Rogier's quests in Elden Ring ahead. Proceed at your own risk.

Elden Ring gives players a lot of freedom in how they build their characters. Some Elden Ring builds are still better than others, but FromSoftware deserves credit for providing players with tremendous flexibility in stats and equipment. This is partly because of how the game approaches classes, treating them as presets for players to build upon however they wish. Many of these classes also encourage players to combine different combat styles.

This includes a variety of warrior-mage hybrids. Elden Ring's Prisoner class offers the purest starting balance of swords and sorcery, though the Astrologer, Prophet, and Confessor also offer great opportunities for anyone interested in that battlemage fantasy. However, no power fantasy would be complete without the right rig outfit, and one rare armor set stands out as the perfect gear of an aspiring battlemage.

Elden Ring’s Spellblade Set

Elden Ring Spellblade Set

Elden Ring's Spellblade Set is a unique Armor Set consisting of the Spellblade's Pointed Hat, Spellblade's Traveling Attire, Spellblade's Gloves, and Spellblade's Trousers. These stylish duds will make sure players look the part of the traveling battlemage, and some consider them to be the best mage armor in the game. However, it can be a bit difficult to get the most out of them if the player doesn't know the right way to use them.

Regarding stats, this Elden Ring's Set offers high Damage Negation against magical attacks. This includes 25.11 points of resistance to Magic damage, 25.1 Holy damage resistance, 22.6 resistance to Fire, and 23.5 points of resistance against Lightning. While it's not the absolute best in any one category, it's solidly above average in all four. This is especially good, considering players can acquire the Spellblade Set relatively early in the game.

Unfortunately, the Set's physical resistances are not very impressive, being slightly worse than the Prophet's starting gear, while resistances are only a relatively minor upgrade. However, the Spellblade Set offsets this by being one of the lightest armor sets in the game. With a weight of only 8.6, no other armor offers the same magical protection for that light of a load.

Of course, what really makes Elden Ring's Spellblade Set stand out is how each piece grants a 2% damage increase to Magic Skills/Ashes of War, for a combined total of 8%. This is made somewhat unclear in the item descriptions, which misleadingly refers to these as "glintstone sorcery skills," resulting in various misunderstandings about what this buff does. Rather than improving normal Glintsone Sorceries, it increases the effectiveness of all weapon Skills that deal magical damage.

Examples include many of Elden Ring's Ashes of War, such as the Ice Spear and the Skill versions of Glintblade Phalanx and Carian Grandeur. It also applies to some unique Skills, such as Moonveil's Transient Moonlight and the ranged attack from the Sword of Night and Flame's Night and Flame Stance. These abilities have the potential to be quite powerful on their own, and that 8% bonus makes the Spellblade Set a must-have for Elden Ring players who really want to feel like a mighty magical warrior.

How to Get Elden Ring's Spellblade Set

Player speaking to Rogier in elden ring

Elden Ring players can secure the Set relatively early in the game. The complete Spellblade Set belongs to an NPC named Sorcerer Rogier. The Tarnished can meet him in the Stormveil Castle Chapel before defeating Godrick. While players could simply kill him for his armor, this is inadvisable since he becomes a valuable spell merchant in Roundtable Hold.

Instead, players should seek him out in Elden Ring's Roundtable Hold after killing Godrick. Players should also complete Rogier's quest before talking to Ranni the Witch in Three Sisters for maximum rewards. Either way, if players visit Rogier during Ranni's questline, he reveals that he will soon fall into a deep sleep. This happens after the next time players rest at a Site of Grace. After players rest enough times, Rogier will die, and players can loot the Spellblade Set and other items from his body.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
