Alongside the eight new weapon types introduced in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, the DLC brings a host of new additions for existing weapon types as well. From Colossal Swords to Whips to Rapiers, there are a ton of new weapons to find and make builds for.
The
Sword of Night is a new Katana exclusive to the Shadow Realm which can be found by completing Jolan's questline in the Cathedral of Manus Metyr. It's easy to miss this item because the game doesn't give any indication there is something to be found to begin with.
Shadow Of The Erdtree: How To Get The Night Set - Elden Ring DLC
The Night Set consists of one armor, two weapons, and one shield in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree.
Sword of Night Overview: Stat Requirements, Effects, & Skill
Sword of an all-consuming, bottomless black that devours even the light that shines upon it. Wielded by Jolán, Swordhand of Night. The blade of the sword is only semicorporeal, and thus cannot be guarded against completely.
In Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Sword of Night is a new weapon of the Katana weapon type. Wielded originally by Sword of Night, Jolan, it is a medium-range Katana, similar to the Uchigatana in reach but with a slower moveset. Its strength lies in its Ash of War's ability to bypass shields entirely, and it relies heavily on it to deal damage. Its Strong Attack is also useful as it allows the user to prime the Katana for two quick swings after lunging forward a short distance.
The Sword of Night can be upgraded using Somber Smithing Stones to +10, and cannot benefit from spell-based or consumable weapon buffs.

Sword of Night Weapon Skill: Witching Hour Slash
The Sword of Night Ash of War is Witching Hour Slash, which cannot be changed. When used, it imbues the weapon with a dark aura that leaks off the blade and surges forward with a flurry of blade strikes, bypassing all guards. This makes it incredibly useful against shield enemies like the Black Steel Knights. It pairs incredibly well with the
Rotten Winged Sword Insignia.
This weapon skill costs 21 FP to cast and can be charged to increase the damage output. Charging up does not cost any extra FP, it just takes time. Charging also increases the radius of the attack, giving it some AoE in addition to the forward slashes
Hold the sword level and infuse it with the dark of Night before unleashing a series of incorporeal attacks. This attack cannot be blocked. Can be charged to increase its power.
How to Get Sword of Night in Shadow of the Erdtree
The Sword of Night can be obtained by finishing
Swordhand of Night Jolan's quest (closely related to Ymir's quest) and giving her the Iris of Occultation at the end. Here are all the steps:
- Visit the Cathedral of Manus Metyr by going through Bonny Village.
- Talk to Count Ymir, and he'll give you the Ruins Map and the Hole-Laden Necklace.
-
Talk to Jolan in the throne room. She'll be standing by a pillar to Ymir's right, near the entrance to the graveyard. If she's not there, rest at the Site of Grace until she appears.
- Ring the bell in the Finger Ruins of Rhia.
- Return to Ymir and talk to him again to receive the Ruins Map (2nd).
- Repeatedly rest at the Site of Grace nearby until Ymir leaves his throne.
- Interact with the chair to unlock the secret tunnel underneath it.
-
Enter the chamber, and you'll be invaded by Sword of Night Anna. Defeat her to claim the
Claws of Night.
-
Return to Jolan and talk to her about Anna. She'll thank you for defeating her.
- Ring the bell in the Finger Ruins of Dheo.
- Return to Ymir to receive the Ruins Map (3rd). Talk to him again until his dialogue is exhausted.
- Rest at the Site of Grace until he leaves his chair again.
-
Head into the secret chamber underneath his throne and ring the bell at the end.
- Defeat Metyr, Mother of Fingers.
- Return to the Cathedral, and you'll be invaded by Jolan.
-
Defeat Jolan and interact with the throne to trigger the fight against Ymir. Defeat him as well to receive
Ymir's Bell Bearing,
High Priest Set, and
Maternal Staff.
- Afterward, rest at the Site of Grace, and Jolan will reappear at her usual resting spot next to the pillar. Talk to her, and you'll be given the choice of giving her an Iris of Occultation or an Iris of Grace.
-
Give Jolan the
Iris of Occultation
to obtain the Sword of Night.
Where to Find Iris of Occultation
Iris of Occultation is a rare item that can be found in certain places in the Shadow Realm. Currently, there are only two confirmed Iris of Occultation in the DLC. Here are their locations:
- Fort of Reprimand: To the left of the gallows in the middle of the courtyard will be an open chute that drops down to the underground. Defeat the Omenkiller that jumps you here to obtain an Iris of Occultation.
- Sunken Chapel: After draining the water from the Church District, you'll find two Ulcerated Tree Spirit bosses down below; one of them drops an Iris of Occultation when defeated.
Messmer Soldier Ashes can be found on a gravesite just past the Omenkiller in Fort of Reprimand.
