The world map in Elden Ring Nightreign is static, though the points of interest, bosses, and rewards spread throughout Limveld are randomized in each run. After playing the game for a while, and after clearing your first Expedition, Nightreign players will encounter their first Shifting Earth Event.
Elden Ring Nightreign: All Map Symbols & What They Mean
To efficiently navigate the world and understand map markers, Nightreign players should follow this guide to every map symbol.
In Nightreign, Shifting Earth events overhaul sections of the map with new areas, inspired by iconic locale from Elden Ring like the Mountaintops of Giants, the Eternal Cities, and the Swamp of Aeonia. This guide explains what Shifting Earth events are and lists all four Shifting Earth events Nightreign players can unlock as they progress through the game.
What Are Shifting Earth Events In Nightreign?
In Elden Ring Nightreign, Shifting Earth events are essentially major modifiers to the Limveld map. There are four different Shifting Earth events Nightreign players can experience, all of which add a massive area to the map that overwrites the normal terrain and layout.
Each area is filled with challenging enemies, bosses, a unique layout, and a powerful permanent reward for your run.
For example, The Crater will turn the northern half of the map into a volcanic crevice, while The Rotted Woods transforms the bottom right corner of the map into a Scarlet Rot-infested forest.
How To Trigger Shifting Earth Events
After you beat the first Nightlord, there is a chance to trigger Shifting Earth events after every expedition, completed or no – though it seems to be more likely when defeating Nightlords. You will unlock Shifting Earth events in sequential order as listed below – first The Crater, then The Mountaintop, then the Rotted Woods, and finally Noklateo.
When you queue up, you will be more likely to match with other players with the same Shifting Earth event active, but it does not restrict your potential pool of players.
Elden Ring Nightreign: Multiplayer, Explained
To play Elden Ring Nightreign with friends, you must make sure to enable certain multiplayer settings to set up private matchmaking.
If other players match with you but do not have a Shifting Earth event active, the map will generate with yours active. If multiple players join with a Shifting Earth event active, the game seems to randomly select one to generate.
Some Remembrance objectives are tied to specific Shifting Earth events, too. For example, Wylder must recover a Silver Tear from Noklateo for his Chapter 8 quest. If you have this Remembrance quest active, you will always see Noklateo spawn in Limveld.
How To Reset Modifiers & End Shifting Earth Events
To clear Shifting Earth effects, Nightreign players have two options. You can either participate in Expeditions until the event disappears or interact with the bed in Roundtable Hold to pass the time until the Shifting Earth event has ended.
You can find the bed in the room where the Dung Eater was located in Elden Ring, just down the hall from the Remembrance journal.
The Crater
- Location: Center of the north half of Limveld
- Reward: Deep below the crater you will find a smithing table that allows you upgrade one armament to Legendary and remove its level requirement
The Crater Shifting Earth event transforms the central northern part of Limveld into a massive volcanic crater with paths leading deep below the earth. The area is home to a number of volcanic and fire enemies from Elden Ring, including Magma Wyrms, Fire Chariots, Fire Monks, and other enemies you might find in Mt. Gelmir and the Volcano Manor.
Enter the Crater from any direction and make your way down on the paths on the western side of the area. You should run into a series of Fire Chariots if you are going the right way. Follow the halls, defeat the enemies along the way, until you get to a large Fog Wall.
Beat the enemies outside, then continue through the dungeon to find a Magma Wyrm boss. When defeated, you will be able to access the smithing table in the boss chamber.
This smithing table will instantly upgrade any of your armaments to Legendary Quality, significantly improving its damage and randomized passive bonuses.It will also remove any level requirements, so if you find a high-level item early, it's not a bad idea to rush into The Crater to remove its level requirement as soon as you can.
The Mountaintop
- Location: Northwest quarter of Limveld
- Reward: At the top of the mountain, you can collect a bonus that halves Frostbite damage and buildup and boosts Attack when near a Frostbite proc
The Mountaintop is an area reminiscent of the Mountaintops of Giants, and is rife with Frost Giants, Ice Dragons, and a host of other cold enemies from Elden Ring. The path up to the top is perilous and specific, and you will have to switch back while looking for Spiritspring jump points to make your way to the top.
Start at the base, and follow the main path as you zig-zag across chains to get to the peak of the Mountaintop. There are few Sites of Grace and Spiritsprings, and a lot of enemies (especially Dragons and Giants), so be careful as you make your way up.
Elden Ring Nightreign: How To Get Dark Souls Skins
To unlock Dark Souls skins, Nightreign players must complete a challenging encounter, then spend Murk at the dresser to purchase Dark Souls costumes.
If you make it all the way up, you will be able to pick up an upgrade that will have the amount of Frostbite damage and Frostbite status buildup, as well as a bonus to attack when you are near a Frostbite effect triggering.
This bonus is nice, but not necessarily overpowered unless you are targeting specific Nightlords with night bosses that deal Frostbite damage. However, there are a lot of field bosses in The Mountaintop, so if you want XP, it's not a bad place to stop on Day 2.
The Rotted Woods
- Location: Southeast quarter of Limveld
- Reward: Deep in the Rotted Woods, you can collect a flower hidden in a tree that grants immunity to Scarlet Rot, increases HP, and recovers HP when you attack after taking damage
The Rotted Woods is a swampy, Scarlet Rot-infested forest that is stuffed with field bosses and blanketed in a haze that constantly builds the Scarlet Rot status effect. When this Shifting Earth event is active, the ring will typically close on the Rotted Woods location on Day 2, giving you plenty of time to gear up to take on the many field bosses in this area.
Find the Fort within the Rotted Woods and use the Reveal Hidden Areas map at the top of the rampart tower to reveal the location of a hidden flower within the forest. Go to this location, climb the tree trunk and drop off to the right onto a hidden platform, then collect "the power of the woods" to get the Rotted Woods bonus.
This will immediately grant full immunity to Scarlet Rot, increase your max HP, and recover some HP whenever you immediately attack after taking damage – not a bad set of passives to bring into the final night.
All Returning Dark Souls Bosses In Elden Ring Nightreign
There are six Dark Souls bosses in Elden Ring Nightreign from all three Souls games, including the Nameless King and the Gaping Dragon.
Noklateo, the Shrouded City
- Locations: Southwest quarter of Limveld
- Reward: A passive bonus hidden deep in the temple within Noklateo that will revive you once from defeat and empower you temporarily upon self-reviving
Noklateo, the Shrouded City is the final Shifting Earth event Nightreign players can unlock, and it offers one of the most powerful bonuses in the game: the ability to come back from defeat.
Noklateo has a single entrance in the middle of its northeast wall, which leads into a maze of Eternal City-like buildings, enemies and bosses taken straight out of Nokstella and Nokron, and a layout that will confuse you the first few times you enter this location. You'll have to go underground, follow side paths, and take hidden Spiritspring jumps to reach the end of Noklateo.
If you are able to navigate to the temple deep within Noklateo, you will be able to pick up what is essentially an extra life. However, you will have to defeat an Astel boss, first. Only go into Noklateo once you have reached at least level 8 to have the best chance to defeat this boss and claim the ability to revive once from defeat.
