Two massive Elden Ring fans have taken the recent fad of location sleuthing which was kickstarted by the game, Geoguessr, and applied it to the vast open world of the Lands Between. With as many stunning vistas and lovingly-crafted locales as Elden Ring contains, it seems like a perfect pairing.
Since its release in early 2022, FromSoftware's smash hit Elden Ring has dominated the gaming world's spotlight, accruing endless accolades and game of the year awards. With the game containing such unparalleled depth and boasting a massive open world with thousands of secrets to discover, Elden Ring has shown no signs of retracting the hooks it has sunk into its millions of devoted fans. Several content patches have already been released, including the most recent Colosseum Update for Elden Ring in December, which has helped to flesh out the PvP side of the game. Nothing is confirmed, but leading speculation is that FromSoftware will unveil the first big DLC for Elden Ring sometime in 2023.
Reddit user TheEdenChild showed off an amazing Geoguessr-style game set in the world of Elden Ring. The fruits of two friends' labor, the Elden Ring Geoguessr contains over 8000 snippets of locations from the game that fans can take their best shot at solving. Players are given a random spot in the game and the ability to pan in the camera in all directions. Based solely off of what they see, they must then correctly place a pin on a map of the game world based on that location. Points are awarded based on speed and accuracy, and after several rounds, players can see how they stack up against others in their Lands Between geography on a leaderboard. There are difficulty settings, including the ability to toggle whether the camera can pan, zoom, or move, as well as determining the game length and timer for rounds.
Originally released back in 2013, Geoguessr had some viral success. At the start of the pandemic, the game hit its second wind, garnering renewed interest and becoming an internet phenomenon by the beginning of 2021. Its popularity was also bolstered by the prolific location-guessing ability of Anton Wallen, who received internet acclaim in 2022 for his uncanny ability to decipher a place's exact coordinates based on a seemingly nondescript screenshot. Whether Wallen will give TheEdenChild's version of Elden Ring Geoguessr a try is unknown, but with the absurd variety of biomes and landmarks set in the Lands Between, it would certainly give him a worthy challenge.
One true mark of a game's greatness rests in the dedication of its fans. Making a Geoguessr game set in Elden Ring took a significant amount of fan effort, and lays bare the tremendous impact that FromSoftware's magnum opus has had on gamers since its release.
Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
