Throughout the Soulsborne genre, magic has been considered one of the most powerful damage types. For example, the Pyromancer was among the most potent builds in the original Dark Souls. This trend has also made its way into FromSoft’s massive and successful open-world title, Elden Ring. While Faith builds wield some of the fiercest Flame incantations, mage builds also harness the might of Magma sorceries. Though not as potent as incantations, Magma spells hold their own ground.

To the far west of Altus Plateau, players can discover the volcanic Mt. Gelmir, home to the Volcano Manor. During his stay at Mt. Gelmir, Rykard, the son of Queen Rennala, discovered ancient hexes lost in the history of these volcanic mountains and brought them back to life in the form of Magma Sorcery. Unlike most sorceries in Elden Ring, Magma Sorcery requires investment in both Faith and Intelligence to be usable. Fortunately, the Faith requirement is relatively low, so players only need to invest a few points into it.

As mentioned earlier, all Magma Sorceries originate from Mt. Gelmir in Altus Plateau. Players interested in building an explosive magma sorcerer build will have to travel all the way to Mt. Gelmir. There are only four different Magma Sorceries available in Elden Ring, and here’s how you can obtain them.

Roiling Magma Location

Roiling Magma is one of the many fun spells in Elden Ring. When cast, it conjures a landmine-like lump of magma that erupts after a brief delay, leaving behind a modest pool of magma. Except for Roiling Magma, all other Magma Sorceries are locked behind quests. Players looking to experience Magma sorcery can claim the Roiling Magma spell from a corpse inside the Hermit’s Shack located in Mt. Gelmir. However, the path to this shack isn’t easy. To reach the Hermit’s Shack, players will have to circle around the treacherous paths of Mt. Gelmir.

Travel to the Seethewater River site of grace located on the west side of Wyndham Ruins in Altus Plateau. From there, head north until you reach the Seethewater Cave (entrance will be marked by an imp statue). Proceed west from the cave until you reach Fort Laiedd. Now, head south and climb the hill to find a rundown shack. On the way, you will cross paths with a Magma Wyrm boss and a Rune Bear. Simply run past them and press onward to reach the Hermit’s Shack and claim the Roiling Magma spell from the corpse inside.

Magma Shot Location

Magma Shot is a long-range Magma Sorcery that causes an explosion and creates a pool of magma. To obtain the Magma Shot spell, players must join Volcano Manor and clear Tanith’s first assassination request. After joining Volcano Manor, you can speak with Tanith to join the group of recusants and receive the drawing room key. Use the drawing room key to open the second room on the left side of the hallway. Inside, you can find a letter from Tanith, which reveals the location of the first assassination target - Old Knight Istvan.

Players must travel north from the Warmaster’s Shack in Limgrave to find the invasion sign for invading Old Knight Istvan. The location will also be marked with a red sign on the map. Return to Tanith, and in recognition of your valor, she will reward you with the Magma Shot spell.

Gelmir’s Fury Location

Elden Ring - Gelmir's Fury spell location

Gelmir’s Fury is an AOE spell that launches and creates a pool of magma all around the caster. Gelmir’s Fury is a reward for carrying out Recusant Bernahl’s assassination request. After accomplishing two Volcano Manor assassination requests, players will receive a letter from Bernahl inviting them to join a co-op invasion.

Elden Ring Bernahl in Volcano Manor

The targets of this collaborative effort, Vargram the Raging Wolf and Errant Sorcerer Wilhelm, await on the first floor of the Fortified Manor in Leyndell, Royal Capital. Players can find the entrance to Fortified Manor by jumping south from West Capital Rampart site of grace. After defeating both targets, return to Volcano Manor and speak with Bernhal to claim the Gelmir’s Fury spell. If you have completed the Volcano Manor questline and defeated Rykard, Bernahl would have already left the manor. You can still claim the Gelmir's Fury spell from his location at the Volcano Manor.

Rykard’s Rancor

Elden Ring - Rykard's Rancor spell trade

Rykard’s Rancor marks the apex of Magma spells, surpassing all others in strength. While most Magma Sorceries are merely average, Rykard’s Rancor emerges as the undisputed powerhouse of its class. To obtain this spell, players must defeat Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, lurking deep beneath the Volcano Manor. Players must complete Volcano Manor’s questline or explore this volcanic legacy dungeon to find the teleporter to Rykard.

After defeating Rykard, players will earn the Remembrance of the Blasphemous. Go to the Roundtable Hold and trade the Remembrance with Finger Reader Enia to obtain the Rykard’s Rancor spell. This spell summons a swarm of spirits with accurate tracking, which can be troublesome to deal with in PVP fights. However, this spell requires 40 Intelligence and 18 Faith while occupying two spell slots.
