Summary
- Cliffhanger Games' Black Panther game is canceled, but EA's Marvel partnership remains strong.
- EA has at least three Marvel games in development, including an Iron Man title by Motive Studios.
- EA and Marvel are committed to delivering original storytelling with beloved Marvel characters.
While Cliffhanger Games’ Black Panther title is no longer in development, EA is reassuring fans that its multi-project partnership with Marvel is still going strong. Earlier this week, EA announced that it was canceling its Black Panther video game and shutting down developer Cliffhanger Games. The Seattle-based developer was formed shortly before work on Black Panther began, and its closure could leave a considerable number of employees out of work.
Black Panther wasn’t the only Marvel-based video game in development at EA. Back in 2022, EA announced that Motive Studios, the developer who made 2023’s Dead Space remake, was working on an Iron Man game. Not many details have been shared since, but recent rumors hint that it will utilize the armored Avenger’s flight abilities in open-world levels. However, the sudden cancellation of Black Panther has understandably left some gamers questioning the future of Iron Man and any other Marvel titles EA has in its pipeline, especially since it came so soon after other high-profile projects like Respawn Entertainment’s unannounced Titanfall extraction shooter were scrapped.
Why a Loaded 2026 For Marvel Games Makes Perfect Sense
2026 could be one of Marvel's most exciting years in recent memory, and it can add to that excitement with some upcoming games.
EA recently addressed these concerns in a statement sent to IGN. In it, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele stated that her company’s partnership with Marvel remains “strong,” and that their “multi-title, long-term collaboration continues.” A different statement from Marvel backs this up by saying that EA and Marvel are still committed to their goal of delivering “original storytelling with various, beloved Marvel characters” through video games on PC and consoles, starting with Motive’s Iron Man title.
EA and Marvel Are Still Working on Three Games
The Marvel representative also confirmed that there are still at least three video games planned at EA, though they declined to share any further details at this time. This deal was first announced alongside the Iron Man game in 2022, with Cliffhanger’s now-canceled Black Panther title eventually confirmed a year later.
Black Panther’s cancellation and Cliffhanger’s closure were just the latest in a series of reshufflings at EA, with the publisher reportedly refocusing its efforts toward a smaller list of proven franchises like Battlefield and The Sims. In the meantime, concept art for the Black Panther game has been leaked online, giving eager gamers a look at what the ultimately unproduced superhero title’s plot and in-game environments might have been like. As for the character of Black Panther himself, players will be able to step into the role of the Azzuri incarnation in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which is currently set to launch sometime next year.
