Summary

  • EA will shut down NHL 20's online functionality on September 16.
  • FIFA 23 will exit EA Play on September 16, while FIFA 22's online services will end on November 4.
  • Battlefield games like Battlefield 3 and 4 will be shut down on PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 7.

September 16 is going to be a sad day for EA fans, as that's when yet another one of the publisher's games is being shut down, while another is being removed from the EA Play library. The majority of EA's games from the past decade have featured extensive online features. The online for these games stays available for a few years, but as the player base moves on to newer entries, EA inevitably shuts down the servers.

It's always a bummer when the online functionality of any game gets shut down, but the good news is EA at least gives fans plenty of time to play its games before it pulls the plug. EA keeps a running list of all its upcoming server shutdowns and delistings, giving fans of the publisher's work the chance to play the games one last time.

NHL 25 Reveals Cover Stars, Release Date, and More

Electronic Arts gives EA Sports fans a little more to look forward to by revealing the release date and key gameplay upgrades in NHL 25.

On September 16, NHL 20 will be shut down, and so its online multiplayer functionality will cease to exist. This is certainly unfortunate for fans of NHL games, but the good news is that the later entries remain available and, in fact, a new NHL game is right around the corner. Barring any unexpected delays, NHL 25 will be available starting October 4. In the meantime, soccer fans will want to be aware that FIFA 23 is being removed from EA Play on September 16. It will not be getting delisted from storefronts and its servers will remain online, however, so it's not as bad as what's happening with NHL 20.

EA Online Services Updates

  • NHL 20 (Shutting Down) - September 16
  • FIFA 23 (Removed from EA Play) - September 16
  • FIFA 22 (Shutting Down) - November 4
  • Battlefield 3 (Shutting Down) - November 7
  • Battlefield 4 (Shutting Down) - November 7
  • Battlefield: Hardline (Shutting Down) - November 7

The more concerning date for FIFA fans is November 4. As confirmed by EA, FIFA 22 is being shut down on November 4, and so time is running out to enjoy that particular game's online multiplayer features. November in general is going to be a rough time for EA fans, as three more games are being shut down on November 7.

Battlefield Games to be Shut Down Later This Fall

Three Battlefield games are being shut down on November 7, with Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield: Hardline all on the chopping block, though only the seventh generation versions of the games. This means that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of those titles are being delisted and shut down, but those interested in playing them will still be able to do so on PS4 and Xbox One. The exception is Battlefield 3, which never received a native PS4 or Xbox One release. Fans can expect EA to continue updating its list of game shutdowns in the weeks and months ahead.
