Reaching and Investigating Eli's Family Cabin
You'll get this side quest by speaking to Eli in the Town Hall around the same time you unlock the 'Power Gambit' main quest. This is right towards the beginning of the main quest, so you won't have to wait long. After speaking with Eli, your first task will be to get to his family cabin house out in the National Park. The location is marked on your map and can be found southeast of the Town Hall, shown in the screenshot above.
Once you reach the family cabin, you'll have to deal with a fair few zombies surrounding the place, so make sure you've come equipped with plenty of healing items and your weapons are in good condition.
After clearing out the enemies outside, head inside the cabin and investigate the large map on the table in the back room. The map shows you where you need to go next, and you'll also get the 'Cave Spare Key' item to open up the way. You can also find a letter from William's wife explaining why she left on the ledge next to the bed.
Leave the lodge from the front door and take a right to find some ledges you can climb on the side of the cliff to reach the top. Follow the top of the cliff toward the waypoint, using tree branches and holds on cliff-faces to make your way to the locked gate at the entrance of the cave.
Use the 'Cave Spare Key' item to open it up and make your way inside to find William standing on a metal walkway overlooking a large cave filled with zombies. It turns out that William is suffering from some type of mental illness that results in him thinking that you're his son.You can either choose to play along with him or tell him straight up you're not his son. I chose to play along to try and make him feel better about the situation.
Connecting the Explosives
He'll eventually tell you that he wants your help to hook up a bunch of explosives he's set up around the cave so he can blow it up and kill all the zombies inside. To the right of where William is standing, you'll find a small bar leading to the first one. You can then follow the arrows in the screenshot below to jump onto the wall, climb up, and shimmy your way across to begin making your way to the second one.
After following this, you'll need to jump across to another cliff face with some holds in it. Once you reach this point, look down and to your right, and you'll find a metal walkway below. You need to jump down to this and follow the path around to the other side of the rocky outcrop you were just holding onto.
There are holds in the cliff face that you jump over to that are higher up than where you initially grab one. Don't let these fool you into thinking there's a way around to the left or over the top. You need to drop to the metal walkway below and to your right
Follow the path around and over the beam, and you'll see the second explosive on the other side of another gap. Use the holds in the rock face to your right to shimmy your way over and jump onto the metal platform where the second explosive is.
After connecting the second explosive, you now need to follow the cable leading to the third explosive. Use your survivor senses (R3) to find it, and you'll notice that it drops into the bottom of the cave where the zombies are. Unfortunately, you'll need to go down there as well. Drop silently and crouch walk on top of the cable itself. As long as you crouch, follow this route, and silently assassinate any zombies that are standing right next to or on top of the cable by approaching them from behind, you'll be able to sneak by the others unnoticed.
On your way to the third explosive, you'll find that the cable has broken at one point. You can repair this relatively easily, and the nearby zombies won't be alerted to your presence.
After reaching the third explosive, you'll then need to do the same thing and follow the cable to the fourth explosive. At the start of this, you'll find three zombies all crouched right next to the cable. Rather than taking them down, creep around the left side of them and hug the rock face to go by undetected.
After getting past these, you'll find another spool of cable that you need to interact with to pull the cable and connect it to the fourth explosive to complete the circuit. Grab it and carry on straight in front of you to find a metal walkway on the ground that leads to some holds in the rock face. Use this to climb your way back up and jump from ledge to ledge to reach the ladder.
Continue to climb your way around the side of the cave, following the waypoints as you go until you find the fourth explosive on the lit platform. From here, follow the path and climb your way back up the side of the cave using the white painted holds to return to William.
Escaping the Caves
After an emotional conversation with William, the explosives will be detonated, and you'll need to quickly escape. Head through the only way you can and drop into the water below. You'll need to swim underwater and choose the right paths to escape.
As you're swimming through the underwater caves, look out for the streams of bubbles coming up from the floor. These show you the way out of the cave if you ever encounter a fork in the path and can save you precious oxygen.
Once you reach the large cave where you can come up for air. Head over to the far side and crawl through the tunnel with the stalacites and stalagmites on the floor and ceiling to find another area where you need to swim underwater to escape. Make your way through this straightforward section and then climb up the side of the cave in the next area. Drop into another pool of water, and then make your way to the only path here.
As you're about to reach the exit, a zombie will grab you from behind, so be ready for a QTE. Once you exit, you'll find some more zombies waiting for you outside. You can either choose to kill them or just run past them.
Return to Eli at the Town Hall and let him know whatever side of the story you choose. He won't forgive his father and won't want the knife that William gave you, so you'll keep it.
On top of this, you'll get 10,000 XP and some manual pages, both of which will come in handy for preparing you for the main quests that lie ahead.
