A massive group of Dungeons and Dragons players recently set a new Guinness World Record for the most people playing at one time. With a force of over 1000 fans, this Dungeons and Dragons game was the largest single game ever.
We Geek Together is a friendly local game store based in Provo, Utah. Run by the Ashby family, We Geek Together began as a booth at the year-long Evermoore Park fantasy experience in 2020 before opening up their first store in 2022.
Now, We Geek Together has led the charge on breaking the world record for the largest game in Dungeons and Dragons history. On April 22, We Geek Together ran The Dead Wars at the Provo Towne Centre Mall. The event lasted for over four hours and hosted a total of 1,227 Dungeons and Dragons players across 200 tables. Though each of these tables ran their own game, the stories were told concurrently, with the results of one rippling forth to affect their neighbors.
The Dead Wars tells a story of Vecna–the iconic lich lord popularized by Stranger Things–and his conquest of the fictional kingdom of Grand. The army of 1,227 5th-level heroes played as the last bastion against Vecna’s undead horde, where they had to work together to stop the invasion. John Jensen, co-author of The Dead Wars campaign, worked closely with We Geek Together to give both players and DMs tips on how to run these games at the same time.
Players interested in learning more about how The Dead Wars played out can do so by checking out We Geek Together’s Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube accounts, where they chronicled the process leading up to the event, including footage from the game itself. Jensen also recently published The Dead Wars on DriveThruRPG. Available for $20, this 145-page PDF includes the one-shot campaigns run by the various Dungeon Masters, as well as maps, monsters, and tips for running a record-breaking D&D game of their own.
Fans looking to put more of Vecna in their Dungeons and Dragons games have a lot of reasons to be excited. Wizards of the Coast recently revealed the major D&D villain would be returning in the revised version of 5th Edition, along with other memorable faces like Venger, the League of Malevolence, and the Red Wizards of Thay. It seems Dungeons and Dragons fans will have plenty of opportunities to tell epic stories featuring classic villains just like We Geek Together did.
