Summary

  • The One DnD playtest has made changes to the Cleric class, including a rework of its signature ability, Divine Intervention, to make it more reliable in casting spells.
  • The Cleric class in One DnD has a new feature called Divine Order which allows players to dedicate themselves to specific roles, such as Protector or Thaumaturge, each with unique abilities.
  • The Cleric subclasses in One DnD, including Life, Light, Trickery, and War Domains, have received updates and improvements to their spells and features, giving the Cleric more options for protection and support.

The One DnD playtest is already on its seventh iteration, and it’s implemented various changes to classes like the Cleric. It didn’t receive as many modifications to its core attributes like spell slot amount and proficiency bonuses, unlike other classes. However, it received a rework to one of its signature abilities: Divine Intervention. In the current edition, it lets players call upon their deity for aid, and if they get a d100 roll that’s equal to or below their level, they succeed. Fans wanted this feature to be more reliable, so the One DnD designers added a function that lets players automatically succeed at casting a level 5 (or below) spell. Apart from this change, the class also received other updates, like:

  • Divine Order, a new feature
  • Blessed Strikes, a more versatile version of Divine Strikes from previous editions
  • Improvements to Channel Divinity
  • Modifications and additions to subclasses

Despite being a replacement, One DnD is meant to be backward compatible with DnD 5th edition. Players don’t need to unlearn the rules they’ve known for over a decade, but the newest edition adds fresh content and changes to its fundamental elements. Therefore, DnD’s designers and developers are using the recent playtests to get valuable feedback that will help them balance and polish the game before its 2024 release.

How the One D&D Cleric’s New Divine Order Feature Works

The newest feature of One DnD’s Cleric is Divine Order, which lets the player dedicate themselves to one of these scared roles from level 1:

  • Protector — The cleric becomes proficient at martial weapons and trained in heavy armor, perfect for those who want to run a bruiser build that can take on some frontline duties for the party.
  • Thaumaturge — The player gets one extra cantrip from the Cleric spell list and receives a bonus to their Intelligence checks equal to their Wisdom modifier.

One D&D’s Cleric Gets Updates to its Subclasses, Spells, and Other Features

The sixth One DnD playtest laid out changes to the Cleric's Life, Light, Trickery, and War Domains.

Life Domain

This subclass is best for players who want to be a pure healer for their party. Here are some of the notable updates it received:

  • Preserve Life — This used to be a way to exclusively heal selected creatures using Channel Divinity. Now, it lets players prepare any Abjuration spell from the Cleric spell list.
  • Domain Spells — Prayer of Healing is replaced by Aid, which is a more reliable way to heal the party.

Light Domain

Light Clerics use the power of the sun to burn their enemies and illuminate the truth hiding in the darkness. Significant updates to this subclass include:

  • Domain Spells — Moonbeam and See Invisibility were added to the list to highlight the subclass’ affinity for revelations.
  • Warding Flare — This now has the benefits of Improved Flare, which lets the Cleric use the ability to protect allies from enemy attacks as well.

Trickery Domain

This uses stealth and illusions to deceive others in and out of combat. Here are some of the updates to this Cleric subclass:

  • Blessing of the Trickster — Players can now use this Dexterity check buff on themselves.
  • Invoke Duplicity — This lets the Cleric create a duplicate of themselves. It’s now a bonus action and lets the player teleport upon using the feature.

War Domain

This domain is great for those who want a DnD Cleric build that focuses on weapon-based combat. Notable updates include:

  • Avatar of Battle — This now includes resistance to both magical and non-magical versions of slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning damage.
  • War Priest — The feature now grants mastery to a simple or martial weapon that the player has proficiency in. Its bonus attack capability is not tied to an attack action anymore and can now recharge on a short rest.

Some signature Cleric spells also saw some major revisions. A great example is Banishment, which now lets banished creatures do a saving throw each round to escape. Overall, these changes and additions to both base class and subclass features give the Cleric more options to protect themselves and their allies.

One DnD is currently in development and is set to release in 2024.
