The Monster Manual of the next Dungeons and Dragons edition may have new visual designs for Demons and Devils, highlighting the differences between the two types of creatures. Dungeons and Dragons’ new edition’s first book will be the Player’s Handbook, released on September 17, and the Monster Manual will be available on February 18, 2025.
Dungeons and Dragons has two iconic types of Fiends: Demons and Devils. While Demons are Chaotic Evil monsters that hail from the 666-layered Abyss, D&D’s Devils come from the Nine Hells, and are their Lawful Evil counterparts. These creatures have existed since the early editions of D&D, and it seems that they will be reworked for the upcoming Monster Manual.
Dungeons and Dragons 5E Artifact Tier List
Dungeons and Dragons' artifacts are the best of the best when it comes to magic items, but some are not to be trifled with so readily.
According to Dungeons and Dragons art designer Josh Herman, who ComicBook recently interviewed at Gen Con, Demons and Devils may be redesigned in the 2024 edition of the game. While Herman doesn’t believe that all kinds of creatures need to get new visual designs in D&D’s upcoming Monster Manual, some updates will be made so that creatures “fall in line within a family or groups,” and Devils and Demons fit this concept. The designer revealed that the team is interested in further exploring the aesthetic differences between these two kinds of Fiends so that they are easily recognizable. As an example of a change, Herman mentioned the Demogorgon, an iconic creature that would have the same general look, but could be tweaked to reveal something “more under the surface” and add more flavor to the art. Unfortunately, no actual artwork regarding these new Fiends has been unveiled yet.
D&D's Devils and Demons Could Be Getting New Visual Designs Soon
Previously, D&D has revealed changes to its dragons’ design. Essentially every kind of dragon will get reworked visuals, such as Gold Dragons with exceptionally long tails and resembling draconic creatures from Chinese mythology, or Black Dragons with a huge skull on their heads. According to Herman, the changes to Demons and Devils will be in line with what was done to differentiate dragons from each other.
While many monsters will be overhauled in the upcoming 2024 edition, some small changes have called the attention of the player base. For example, cats will finally have Darkvision in Dungeons and Dragons. These animals, which will already be available in the Player’s Handbook, did not have Darkvision in D&D Fifth Edition, which displeased many gamers over the years, considering how real-life cats are skilled nocturnal hunters with excellent vision.
