The new 2024 edition of Dungeons and Dragons is making a creepy change to the Petrified condition, allowing Dungeon Masters to decide whether a character is conscious or not when turned into stone. Announced in 2022, the new Dungeons and Dragons edition aims to keep most of what worked during the 5th Edition intact while making a few significant changes to balance the gameplay.
D&D 2024’s new Player’s Handbook will be officially released on September 17, offering 384 pages of content, including revamped new classes, equipment, and almost 400 spells. Among the new content, players will see the updated combat rules, which will include how conditions such as Petrified or Exhausted will work in the new edition.
The Pros and Cons Of Dungeons and Dragons 2024's Backgrounds Rework
Dungeons and Dragon's 2024 Player's Handbook makes some big changes to backgrounds, some of which have turned out better than others.
Now, ComicBook spotted an interesting change in the Petrified condition in D&D 2024’s PHB. At first glance, the base text of the condition does not change much, as characters are still incapacitated, have a speed of 0, automatically fail Dexterity and Strength saving throws, attacks against them have Advantage, and have the same immunities and resistances as before. However, the 2014 rules clearly stated that Petrified characters were unaware of their surroundings, while the 2024 rules do not. This opens up situations in which a DM may decide that either an NPC or a player character can see and feel everything while turned into stone, no matter how much time has passed since the petrification.
Petrified Creatures Could Be Aware of Their Surroundings in D&D 2024
This is just the latest of many changes unveiled regarding D&D’s 2024 edition. For instance, Wizards of the Coast has been showcasing the new dragon changes for D&D’s next edition during the last few months, which include new designs for essentially all draconic creatures, including some pretty astonishing ones like the new Gold Dragon.
Another D&D change that made the headlines recently was that cats will finally gain Darkvision in D&D 2024. Previously, cats did not have this ability, which displeased some D&D players over the years, considering how real-life cats have excellent vision in the dark.
Week after week, Wizards of the Coast is revealing more information about the upcoming D&D 2024 rulebooks. The new Dungeon Master’s Guide is set to be released on November 12, and it will bring streamlined rules to help DMs run the game, including new rules for headquarters, and the Greyhawk campaign setting. The Monster Manual, however, will only be out in 2025, and it will feature over 500 reworked monsters with new stats.
