The Vehicle Backup Tool is one of the most useful pieces of equipment in Dune: Awakening, allowing players to store their vehicles in their inventory and restore them at will instead of having them sit out in the sun, getting damaged from radiation and heat.

To balance this tool and to prevent it from becoming a game-breaking item, the developers have added a few limitations to it that aren’t apparent until players run into them during gameplay, sometimes leading to confusion. Here is how it works.

How to Use the Vehicle Backup Tool in Dune: Awakening

The Vehicle Backup Tool can be crafted at a standard Fabricator under the Vehicles section. The crafting costs are:

To store the vehicle, equip the Vehicle Backup Tool, aim at the vehicle you want to store, and press the activation hotkey. If the vehicle is in range, you’ll see two green arrows to indicate that storage is possible.

To restore the vehicle, point at an empty space with the Vehicle Backup Tool equipped until a green hologram of the vehicle appears. Press the activation hotkey again to restore it.

Restoring vehicles sometimes experiences a minor delay if there is server lag. To fix this, keep moving with the tool equipped, and the green hologram will appear. Additionally, some PvP zones also disallow vehicle restoration; players are required to return to a PvE zone for normal operation.

If a vehicle has something in its inventory, it cannot be stored in the Vehicle Backup Tool.

Which Vehicles Can Be Stored Using the Vehicle Backup Tool

In Dune: Awakening, players can only store a Sandbike or a Scout Ornithopter with a Vehicle Backup Tool. The Buggy, Assault Ornithopter, Carrier Ornithopter, and Sandcrawler cannot be stored in the Vehicle Backup Tool. This is done to prevent players from trivializing the difficulty of late-game supply runs, especially in the Deep Desert.

To transfer large vehicles between locations, players will have to ride them to their destination directly. Alternatively, it is possible to disassemble a Vehicle, store its individual parts in player inventory, and reassemble it at another location.

The Vehicle Backup Tool is one of the only items that is not destroyed in a Sandworm attack. Any vehicle stored inside will remain safe as well.

Can You Store More Than One Vehicle Using the Vehicle Backup Tool

No, you cannot. In Dune: Awakening, players can only store one vehicle at a time with the Vehicle Backup Tool. The number indicator (1/10) that appears when equipping the Vehicle Backup Tool is the number of vehicles a player owns, not the number of vehicles that the tool can store at one time.

Fabricating more than one Vehicle Backup Tool will not increase the storage limit; the game will only recognize one instance as being active. If players store a Sandbike in one Vehicle Backup Tool, for example, and then equip another one, the new one will have the same Sandbike stored inside of it.
