When players build a large second base in Dune: Awakening, they may think they are set in terms of size, even if the location might eventually have to be changed. However, the number of fabricators, ore refiners, storage chests, and vehicle parking spots soon racks up as players progress through the game, and bigger bases become necessary.

Thankfully, players aren't completely restricted by the bounds of their Sub-Fief Console or the larger Advanced Sub-Fief Console, which determines the max width, length, and height of a base. The way to overcome these initial building restrictions is to obtain Staking Units in Dune: Awakening, but players should be warned that they are expensive to make.

How To Get Staking Units In Dune: Awakening

Staking Units are produced at the base, but the Staking Unit Set must first be researched for 10 Intel Points.

Next, players will need to make a Survival Fabricator if they don't already have one. After being researched, Survival Fabricators can be constructed with 40 Steel Ingots and 30 Complex Machinery.

Steel is also needed for the Staking Units, so make sure to farm lots of Carbon Ore, the main resource for Steel Ingots. 4 Carbon is needed for each Steel Ingot.

Once players have their Survival Fabricator, which is also required for upgrades such as the Cutteray Mk3, players can craft their Staking Units.

The recipe is the same for Horizontal and Vertical Staking Units, and players should make sure they know which way they would like to expand their base before crafting.

  • 15 Steel Ingots
  • 15,000 Solari

As a ton of Solari is required, players will want to know all the best ways to farm Solari in Dune: Awakening.

How To Use Staking Units & Expand The Base Size In Dune: Awakening

After crafting a Staking Unit and having it in their inventory, players will want to place the Staking Unit in an item slot.

Increasing the size of the base vertically with a Vertical Staking Unit does not increase a player's taxes, whereas horizontal additions do.

Upon equipping the Staking Unit and holding it, players should see the existing borders of their base in blue. The normal Staking Unit will essentially double the size of the Advanced Sub Fief Console's boundary. Players can go to any corner and place their new plot of land on the front, back, or either side, as long as there are no building restrictions, such as those near NPC camps.

Press LMB or Square/X to build the Staking Unit. This will then start a 4-minute visible timer. During this time, players can pick up the Staking Unit to cancel their decision.

After the 4 minutes are up, players will then be able to use their Construction Tool to build in this new zone. The Staking Unit will now disappear, meaning it cannot be picked up again, and the base is permanently bigger.

For those looking to be as efficient as possible while playing Dune: Awakening, these are the best base layouts to make use of.

How Do Vertical Staking Units Work

While normal Staking Units provide an extra square, Vertical Staking Units make the entire base area taller. This new height applies to every part of the bounds, including future horizontal additions.

Players are reporting that bases can have a total of 8 Staking Units per base, so for example, 6 Horizontal and 2 Vertical.
