No matter how you manage to get into Battahl when playing Dragon's Dogma 2, you'll find a new biome and a new set of quests waiting for you. One such quest is "Mercy among Thieves," which is waiting for you among the tents on the Battahl side of Checkpoint Rest Town.
"Mercy among Thieves" introduces you to a few characters belonging to the bandits and guards of Battahl. Some of them are more sympathetic than others. Read on to learn how to start this quest, how to finish it, and what can happen next.
Dragon's Dogma 2: Best Weapons For Thieves (& Where To Find Them)
Thieves may excel in performing fancy trickery and delivering swift blows, but they still need proper weapons to defeat bosses in Dragon's Dogma 2.
How to Start Mercy Among Thieves
There are a few encounters in Checkpoint Rest Town that have a bearing on this quest. The first is Lyssandro, the man who proposes the quest in the first place. He stands close to the oxcart waiting post, and he has a light colored robe and dark hair in a bun. He mentions that a bandit group called the Coral Snakes is terrorizing the roads of Battahl, and hopes that you can help take care of them.
The second encounter is with a boy named Toumi. You can find him standing by a blue tent past the inn. He'll beg you for food, and you can give him any food you happen to have. After the second time you give him something, a young man named Hugo will show up and accuse you of trying to hurt Toumi. Toumi will correct him, and Hugo will apologize and leave. This encounter seems to have no impact on the quest, but it provides some insight into Hugo's character.
The final encounter is with a man named Seferinno. You'll find him on the road between Checkpoint Rest Town and the spot where you can get a good look at Battahl's desert landscape. He mentions that he saw a destroyed oxcart on the road to town, and he suspects the Coral Snakes are responsible. Speaking with Seferinno will give you a quest marker that will make it easier to continue "Mercy among Thieves." However, you can also find it by continuing to walk along the main road, or by hiring a pawn who has been through the quest already. Here's where to go:
Chasing Hugo Down
Once you reach the broken oxcart, you'll see Hugo arguing with a couple Coral Snakes who are threatening a child. He'll spot you and a Battahl guard named Benjamin, and run for his hideout. Follow him through the canyons southwest of the road until he leads you to Lanzo, the leader of the Coral Snakes. This pursuit has several stages:
- Hugo argues with a pair of guards by the front door, then runs inside when he spots you. These guards have names and can be resurrected, but you must kill them to continue this quest.
- Hugo runs across a rope bridge that breaks after he crosses. You can reach the other side of the cave by jumping across, using levitation, using another rope bridge, or by heading to the far side of the cave and climbing up.
- Hugo speaks to a couple of Coral Snake children, then all three retreat behind a portcullis that closes behind them. The other door in this chamber leads to a longer route that eventually meets back up with the way Hugo went.
- Hugo flees across a wide canyon filled with bandits. Benjamin and his men reappear at this point, and they'll help you with the bandit encounters in this area.
The canyon only has one other exit, so head for it once you finish looting the area. Once you reach the next location, you'll see a cutscene in which Lanzo betrays Hugo to buy himself time to escape. Benjamin will arrest Hugo, and the quest will end. Your reward for beating it is 4,000 XP and 8,000 gold.
You can climb up and around the scaffolding to find a quick way out of the canyons (plus another few chests). The next time you're in Bakbattahl, you can find Benjamin standing near the oxcart post and speak with him to start the follow-up quest "Off the Pilfered Path."
