Dragon's Dogma 2: Best Early-Game Body Armor & Where To Find Them

As with most action RPG games, Armor is of the utmost importance in Dragon's Dogma 2. Many players at the start of their journey will be wondering about the best Body Armor they can find early on. The most important Armor stat is raw Defense, but having resistance to Magick damage or to getting knocked off one's feet is also very welcome.

Players should be aware that specific Armor in DD2 can only be worn by members of certain vocations, meaning there is no de facto best Body Armor for the early game. A set of Armor that is great for a Fighter might not be accessible for an Archer. As changing vocation is very easy, players might want to hold onto certain Armor and Weapons for when they feel the itch to try out a new play style.

6 Grand Surcoat

Vocations: Fighter & Mystic Spearhand

While Fighters have a few better options, the Grand Surcoat is the best early-game Body Armor for the Mystic Spearhand vocation, which players can unlock fairly easily. Mystic Spearhands favor lighter Armor, so the 69 Defense is high compared to the alternatives available. The wearer of this surcoat will also gain a small amount of resistance to Ice.

Players can purchase the Grand Surcoat from Bjorn at his armory in Vernworth. As players will be returning here often either to purchase Armor or upgrade it, it might be a good idea to give Bjorn a gift to raise his Affinity and thus get a discount on his goods.

5 Animistic Robe

Vocations: Sorcerer

To unlock the Sorcerer vocation, players will need to complete the Vocation Frustration quest, which involves finding a staff. Once players become a Sorcerer, they will also need some new Body Armor. Arguably, the best option for the early game is the Animistic Robe, which has fantastic Magick Defense.

Thankfully, as long as players have enough gold, the Animistic Robe is very easy to acquire. They can simply buy it from the Armorer Bjorn in Vernworth.

4 Scaled Jacket

Vocations: Thief & Warrior

The Scaled Jacket is arguably the best early-game option for Thieves. It is also a solid lighter option for Warriors who would rather not be held down by heavy plate armor. Its Defense stat of 66 is considerably higher than other options available to Thieves, and the resistance against Ice damage comes in useful against a few foes.

Players can purchase the Scaled Jacket for their Arisen or main Pawn at Bjorn's Armory. It costs 11700 gold, but players can get a 5% or 10% discount at shops by giving the NPC in question suitable gifts. Players can find out which gifts are preferred in the History tab of the menu.

3 Lamellar Armor

Vocations: Archer & Magick Archer

For Archers in particular, but also Magick Archers once this vocation is unlocked, the Lamellar Armor is the best early option, at least in terms of stats. While it doesn't provide as much defense as heavier types of Armor, this is okay, as Archers are less likely to be hit in the backlines.

It does provide fairly good Magick Defense, which is useful with spells able to travel far enough to be a threat to Archers. Lamellar Armor can be found in Vernworth at Bjorn's Armory, where it costs 12400 gold.

2 Guardian Plate Armor

Vocations: Fighter & Warrior

For Fighters and Warriors, the Guardian Plate Armor is easily one of the best early-game options. It provides great defense all around, as well as some bonus resistance to fire. It is also one of the best-looking pieces of Body Armor, especially for fans of the Middle Ages.

Guardian Plate Armor is also easy to find, as it can be purchased from Bjorn's Armory in the main city of Vernworth. While its price tag of 12800 gold might seem scary at first, players will soon find out that gaining lots of gold in Dragon's Dogma 2 isn't that hard.

1 Eminent Coat

Vocations: Mage

While only Mages can make use of it, the Eminent Coat is one of the best finds in the early stages of Dragon's Dogma 2. It grants the wearer good Defense, excellent Magick Defense, and an abundance of resistances. It is particularly protective against fire, which is a common damage source.

Unlike a lot of the best early-game Body Armor in DD2, the Eminent Coat cannot be bought. Instead, players have two options to find it out in the wild. First, it can be found within a chest at the end of the Ancestral Chamber cave, which is part of the A Trial of Archery quest. Secondly, there is a chance that players can steal it from a Wight in the Waterfall Cave, using the Thief skill Pilfer. This Wight will appear after players open a chest at the center of the cave's second level.
