The Sage is one of the best vocations in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. And while the Hero protagonist cannot become a Sage, any other member of the party can unlock this unique vocation, which harnesses the spells and abilities of the Priest and the Mage. The process of becoming a Sage, however, is not as easy as picking a vocation at Patty's Party Planning Place. There are only two ways to become a Sage in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, and this guide will walk you through both.

How to Get a Sage in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

DQ3-ToT-Directions-Map

As mentioned above, there are two methods for turning a party member into a Sage in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. While both methods will result in a Sage that can earn the same spells and abilities, one of the methods will result in a Sage with much better attributes. The two methods are as follows:

  • The Gadabout Method
  • The Words of Wisdom Method

Both methods will require you to use Alltrades Abbey, and the second method will require the Tower of Transcendence. These locations are conveniently found in a straight line heading north from Baharata. See the map above, and video below, for the exact route.

First, we will go over the Gadabout method, which some may consider to be the easier of the two. And while this method may be easier, it will usually result in a statistically inferior Sage.

To create a Sage in this way, you'll need to either start with a Gadabout in your party, or change one of your existing party members at Alltrades Abbey.

While it is much faster to start with a Gadabout in your party, you can make a much more interesting Sage if you level-up a Thief, Monster Wrangler, or even a Priest, which is generally considered the best base vocation for creating a Sage, statistically speaking. All the spells and abilities you earn before switching vocations will carry over. A Sage with Thief or Monster Wrangler spells and abilities can be incredibly useful. But starting with the Gadabout in your party is the fastest way of getting a Sage using this method.

Once you have a Gadabout in your party, you'll need to get them to Level 20, which is the required level to change any party member's vocation. However, only the Gadabout can switch directly to the Sage at Alltrades Abbey. Once you switch vocations, the Sage will revert to level one, but the stats will only be cut in half. You will begin unlocking both Mage and Priest spells and abilities.

How to Use the Words of Wisdom Method:

The second method of becoming a Sage in Dragon Quest 3 Remake is through the Words of Wisdom book. Words of Wisdom is a one-of-a-kind book that will allow any party member to instantly – and permanently – become a Sage.

Words of Wisdom functions slightly differently than the other books in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. To use it, add it to your inventory, and visit Alltrades Abbey. You will now see Sage listed among the vocations you can switch to. This means that all characters must be level 20 before switching to Sage.

Words of Wisdom is found in the Tower of Transcendence, which is located directly north of Alltrades Abbey. The book can be tricky to locate, so we'll cover it in full in the next section.

If you are going to use the Words of Wisdom method, it's generally recommended that you use a Priest as the base vocation. Even though you will learn the Priest's spells and abilities as a Sage, using a Priest ensures you can make the strongest possible Sage when switching over.

How to Get Words of Wisdom in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

Words of Wisdom is the top tier reward found at the Tower of Transcendence. To reach the tower, follow the path slightly northeast from Alltrades Abbey. It's difficult to miss as you make your way through the overworld. The tower stands tall in the distance. If you have not yet found Alltrades Abbey, check out our guide to switching vocations in Dragon Quest 3 Remake for a complete walkthrough.

Path to Words of Wisdom:

When you arrive at the Tower of Transcendence, follow the main path into the complex. Go north under the arches, then make a left at the first turn. When you reach the area before the first warp portal, continue west, but stay on the north side of the portal. Continue west all the way until you reach another archway where you can turn right.

Turn right under the archway and take the stairs on the left. At the top of the stairs, you'll see that there is a tightrope heading east. Cross the rope and then head down the stairs. You'll encounter another warp protal. Use the portal.

After exiting the portal, you'll see three sets of stairs on the east side of the chamber. Take the center stairs. At the top, you'll see stairs on the north side of the chamber and the south side. Take the stairs on the south side. You'll enter a small chamber between stairs with a treasure chest. Continue up the next set of stairs.

At the top, you'll encounter yet another large set of stairs. Keep going up. At the top chamber, head west and you'll encounter another tightrope. Cross the rope until you reach the flag. Face toward the camera and fall. You will end up on a roof. Head west and fall into the hole in the roof. Inside, take the stairs that lead down to the chamber below.

In the lower chamber, head east up the small set of stairs. Here, you'll encounter a treasure chest containing Words of Wisdom.
